40GB PS3 Does Use 65nm Processors After All

None of the console manufacturers have really been very open in regards to their CPU micro architecture. However, when rumors went around that Sony was filling the 40GB PS3s with 90nm processors as if it was a bad thing, Sony was very prompt in dispelling such rumors. They announced in an interview that the Cell processor in the 40GB PS3 was indeed on 65nm technology, dropping power consumption by an impressive 100W. The NVIDIA RSX chip, though, still is on a 90nm processor, which is why people assumed the entire 40GB PS3 was still on a 90nm process.

I'd buy an 80GB version if they switch those to 65nm too as I plan to fold on it non-stop.

Same here. Reduced power is nice, but I'm not giving up compatibility.

if you want to buy one... just wait for black friday....i think the circuit city deal includes 2 controllers n spiderman... the bestbuy deal has spiderman 3 nba 08 open season bluray....and dont forget the ps3 qualifies for the 5 free movies by mail in... i personally got the 60gb version... as far as bluray n hd dvd goes... i like em both...afterall i have the xbox add on...i believe the bluray shows alot cleaner...i need to send in my reb for my hd dvds as i speak...im thinking of buyin a ps3 40 gb or da wii for my lil bros....

i think the wii is ok but they love god of war and those type of games...wii out of the question then!!! dont wanna chance da 360 because of failure rate...so ps3 looks like da only logical choice...but the price....lol for lil bros at least...dont really matter but they're kids eventhough they have my ps2 for like 2 yrs no and no damage at all.
i already have enough hd dvd n bluray movies... also thinking of getting the a3 for 2bills w/ 9 movies for my mom/dad

The 40GB version has no backwards compatibility. The 60GB version has almost 100% backwards compatibility with PS2, and some backwards compatibility with PS1 games. It has the PS2 hardware in it, but uses a PS1 emulator that is good but not perfect. The 80GB version use an emulator for both PS2 and PS1 games. So it has limitted, but growing, PS2 support, and pretty good PS1 support.

Personally, I have a PS2, so backward compatibility isn't really that important. Especially since most of my PS2 games are either burnt or run off the 250GB Hard Drive in my PS2.

Love the power reduction, wish it was like that on the original 60GB version.

Lower power consumption is cool in my book. I must say i'm seriously considering picking up a ps3. I have an xbox 360, but it failed on my twice within a month. Since the thing is so unreliable i'm going to wind up selling it before i even had a chance to really get into Halo 3 or Project Gotham 4. I don't like the cutesy games of the wii so the natural choice is the PS3. You get more for your money with it even if the game library is a little lack luster at the moment. 2008 it will be the far superior system. I still question its reliability.
