Advice on new rig...

Hi, My mate is thinking of buying a new rig along the lines of this (main purpose is gaming)....

Asus P5N32-E SLi (680i) - Motherboard
C2D E6750 - CPU
Crucial Ballistix 2GB - Memory
Enermax Noistaker 600watts -PSU
Evga 8800 GT SSC - GFX

What do you think? Not sure about the processor or the motherboard but want to spend around this much. Is it worth getting a quad core at around the same price or not? I'm going to OC it so obviously I'm going to upgrade fans and get a decent case for it. Any advice appreciated

humm quad cores (q6600) can be had for cheap nowadays, myself personnally would pick a q6600 g0 stepping over the e6750 for sure. though for a quad and a 680i board you would need a A1 revision version of the 680i to be able to overclock the quad nicely (over 3ghz).

If you get a q6600 and the right board you can hit 3.4-3.8 with 1.45v which is nice.. thats with a g0 stepping, try and find a store that sell g0 q6600's and than buy it!

case? how much are you willing top spend on a case? and do you plan sli down the road?

yes definately you are better off with the Q6600

and i suggest a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L motherboard or if you want raid then get the Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R

Depending on when he's wanting to get it, wait for Penryn and the new quad-cores. If he's wanting his system now, grab a cheap e21x0 and overclock it until January.. that's what I'm doing at least.

a q6600 with g0 is about £40 or ~$80 more than the E6750 is it definitely worth it? Was kinda at the limit of the budget already.

I don't think the motherboard should be a problem with quad cores as it said in the spec is was "quad core ready" ....

the Q6600 go 2.4ghz with a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L motherboard will overclock to 3.4 easy so you cant ask for better than that

also i would recommend using the epower zu550w psu found here:

Over here the q6600 is cheaper than the e6750 atm where I shop, make sure to use shopbots to find the best prices. I boguht a quad not knowing if it was going to be a g0 or not and I wasent to afraid of it not being a g0 because all that means is that it would need a little more volts. since your only shooting for 3.0ghz+ any q6600 will suit your needs well see what the best price is you can find.

About the motherboard, gigabye make some excelent budget motherboards and you dont need a 680i since you dont plan on crossfire I think you should look into a asus p5k premium its a great, Excelent board for a single video card set-up. You could concider a Gigabyte GA-G33M-DS2R mATX if you prefer a smaller case, thats one excelent matx motherboard thats good for overclocking.

What do you people think about him grabing any q6600? and if you get a b3 stepping elc, just upgrade the cooler down the road so you have so happy overclocking.

im all for the q6600 chewy, and a great giga p35 ds3 will be a great board, enermax and topower(the oem of epower) are both good, though epower is on the cheaper side

I'm not sure the penryn is really going to be better than the Q6600 GO. Have you seen any benchmarks comparing the two?

^^ yeah I wouldnt worry to much about Penryn, all it is is a die shrink and added cache.. nothing major/no point waiting around for it, q6600 can be had for quite cheap today! I got mine for $270 + taxes but on top of that I saved myself $40 or so on shipping costs that my order would of cost me since the q6600 had a deal where you get free shipping on the entire order.

The P35-DS3 range all look like good choices but I cant find any reviews for the GA-P35-DS3L that you mentioned. Is there much difference between the GA-P35-DS3L and the GA-P35C-DS3R ?

you want to get a rev 2 board btw.

penryns can clock signicantly higher then kentsfields because of the die shrink. as for same speed performance penryn will probably outperform a little because of the extra cache. i would wait till penryn, you can clock a lot more and better performance. people have been able to get like 4.5g on penryns with air

good luck finding a Evga 8800 GT SSC my friend watched ko's and regulars go in and out of stock twice waiting for the SSC to come in and finally got tired of waiting and just bought an ssc and oc'ed it
