Intel X48 Chipset Delayed To March

Intel has sent out a notice to inform its partners that the X48 chipset delivery will be delayed to sometime in March. No motherboard manufacturers will get chipsets before March and that includes the first tier brands like ASUS and GIGABYTE. Intel did not give any official reason for the delay.

The more I put off my upgrades waiting on newer hardware, the more delays.

And by the time the hardware you waited for arrives, there's something newer and greater JUST on the horizon. Which you decide to switch too... and so the waiting begins again...

I've decided to get an X38 based upgrade once my bonus comes through, it's not much different to the X48 anyway!

Already got an x38 4 days before it's NDA Called in some favours. X48 sounds like a rehash of x38 but more overclockable. Nothing really new, but correct me if I'm wrong

^That sounds more realistic. Intel is full-on into the chipset superiority wars against NVidia. The 790i comes with DDR3 support?

Unofficial Reason for Delay: Lack of Competition.

Even though Intel isn't my favorite company, I like seeing new technologies being released -- and though I've an AMD chip coming to me in the mail, I do happen to like the technology behind Intel's next generation of 45nm chips that are coming out. Delays with no reason given make me remember Intel back in the Pentium II days.

My thoughts exactly. Lack of competition is also probably why the X48 is not much different than the X38. Not to mention there's probably a healthy volume of X38 chips still out there. Waiting for inventories to dwindle a bit before the X48 is introduced probably isn't a bad idea for Intel at least.

Apparently the x38 has not sold that well, certainly not in comparision to the P35, I read an article the other day which said that in since the x38's release the P35 had outsold it 35/1 so perhaps they want to sell more of those first before bringing in an even more expensive board.

Well, is the X38 that much different from the P35? I don't know much about Intel chipsets, so I can't make a judgement. But, I know that we technology aficionados are smart people, so if people aren't buying the X38, maybe it's not worth it? (Not enough new features, etc.)

Well, major differences?....not a great deal, improved memory bandwidth apparently and in some....native 1600FSB support plus PCI-E 16 x 16 as opposed to 16 x 4 and of course PCI-E 2.0 on the x38 but TBH, not a vast amount especially if you dont intend to go XFire.
Having said that, some of the very top end P35 boards cost more or less as much as the x38's....well some of them.

The P35 chipset seems to perform as well or better in benchmarks than the X38 chipset. The only thing the x38 chipset really offers is crossfire, which up until the HD 3870 X2 didn't perform much better than a single 8800GTX. I'm hoping the 790i will overclock Quad cores as well as intels offerings. Otherwise there's not much out there that's superior than my current hardware for everyday gaming.

Well thats just dandee! I was hoping that the x48 being released before march would've lowered prices of some of the x38 boards. But apparently I now have to pay the same price
