Just FYI, people are rarely permanently banned. I can think of less than five that are currently on that list. Excluding the spammers.

I agree that the reasons behind banning are no one's business but the powers that be.

There's already more than enough gossip in the GN section, and floating around through PMs that it doesn't need to be fed any further by broadcasting reasons behind banning.

Speaking of spammers.

How is Techpowerup ready to fight the advertisers that be that might spam this whole website the way that some people on Myspace do?

IS this problem already taken care of or has this issue simply not come up yet?

It hasn't happened really. We get at most 6 spam threads a day and most of them are taken care of automatically by a filter. I imagine the filter would still take care of a lot of them. However, we're not quite as big of a target as myspace and probably never will be.

Let's not discuss that again. It's already been discussed over and over again to exhaustion.

This is a great forum, however, I am displeased to say that I have seen members here that have disappointed me with the material of their posts. Particularly ones that are preaching and stating that their beliefs are the supreme.

Personally, if I were a mod, I would frown upon that and tell the user to avoid doing that, this is a public forum with people from all over the world. If we want preaching, we will get it elsewhere, not here.

There are times where I feel that TPU is in fact too lax, and there would have been users warned of their actions, and maybe a thread or two closed. But those were dealt with fast. So kudos to you moderators for keeping that fine balance between freedom and anarchy.

I wouldn't mind being a moderator myself, never for money, rather as a volunteer (since I am at school anyway) but my reputation here is that I am that weird kid that does weird things.

Oh well.

BTW-> Is there any place where I can write reviews for hardware? If something arrives I may just review it!

I seen no reason to censor people because they have opinions that oppose yours, and you can't sway them otherwise.

not sure if russianboy is talking about religious preaching or opinionated-factual preaching . . . TBH, I can deal with preaching, but it's of the religious variety that I have a big problem with; granted, it's not like religious topics crop up all the time, but when they do, the fanatics sure do come out of the woodwork. Discussing different beliefs is fine and actually quite constructive for a community as a whole, considering how much of a personal thing faith and religion are to people - but all it takes is one person to start with the "read the bible" "Jesus/God is salvation" "I pray for your soul" nonsense to offend someone else.

speaking of, I've got a couple of new stuff this weekend, and might write up a couple of reviews as I haven't seen either of these products in the TPU Reviews listings.

I understand. I am not talking about censoring or blocking out. But some people here do not respect others' beliefs, seeing their's is superior. As a member of a public forum, I think that is pretty big issue. There was one member that downright offended me, calling my lack of religion immoral/sinful etc. I shrugged it off, but somebody may not take that so lightly, and might be deeply hurt.

I'm just saying.

I am referring to religious preaching. But I suppose it applies to any type of "my views/opinions are superior to yours" type of scenarios, which I have seen on TPU, although not much.

and this is why we have a report button!

most people do NOT care about others. Religion is all about hating people who arent of the same beleifs, so the people who are into that will be total asses to everyone who's not religious.

We cant stop it in advance without some really drastic measures - so the current system is fine. If you dont like it, click that button and get a mod involved.

Yes but here is the problem,

say this particular person genuinely has an ego complex, and can be described as a biblesexual, you really can't report him because he is just stating what they think is right.

However, at the same time I have my own opinions, and those are that we are people, entilted to our own beliefs and views. Then some guy comes in and starts preaching about my sinfulness. Ok, this guy is a jerk, so what? Life goes on.

I just shrug it off, in fact, the only time I think a mod should get involved is when he is directly offending YOU, not when he is just annoying everyone as a whole.

But then a big debate starts up, and I think to myself "why hasn't this thread been dealt with, and the member warned?"

But mods are busy people, and since TPU is full of mature people, I think we can handle situations like those in a mature manner.

BURN HIM!

I think this is a situation that if it doesn't get out of hand or is overly-offensive then it should be handled at a user level. In the end this is a Tech Forum, so unless you're preaching PC's, Graphics cards and Games to me on this site, I could care less what anyone's religious beliefs are on this site, nor do I care to share mine on a tech site.

But if it goes to far, and let's say, someone really does offend you russianboy, then I believe you should report it to get the point across to the other individual that they're causing issues by aiming at another user. Everyone has the right to believe in what they want imo, no-one should have that held against them.

This is also a free-public forum, and the General Nonsense seems to be always buzzing. I visit that area here and there, sometimes I'll get involved in a thread, but not too often. I try to keep my visits to TPU positive and helpful, as many others also do, which is what makes this a great place to be.

One click removes all registered users associated with that IP address, and all posts made. Not much of an issue.

I'm sure it's nice to have a decent "arsenal" ready to keep TPU peaceful! I've only seen short-lived spammer bursts on here that you guys generally catch and clean up very quickly, and it is so nice to see action like that!

TBH - I've yet to see a spam thread, so they're obviously dealt with very quickly.

Mad respect for that - is just irritating in the foulest of sense.

I seriously think I'm in a similar position as dan :\.... some guys hate me for some odd reason.

Yeah SPAM FTL. eats up space in the server + forum-degrading. I cant really stand people who use alternate reasons to get out of things. Example: "Burn Gigabyte 5/10" <<< We got too many of those users who usually exist to annoy people and not really contribute, trollers.

What about the teen clubhouse? I would say that was a severe spam thread

Has nothing to do with the forums in my case. People simply tend to dislike people who are direct and tell you what they think. They want you to sugar coat everything so their precious inner-self is protected. You should see the reported posts, plenty of people cry about "he disagreed with me and didn't express love while doing so". It's a human trait.

As for spamthreads, there are plenty left. Mostly in general nonsense. Spamclubs get started a lot as well. Most are deleted though. Deleting everything is general nonsense is bullshit because of a similar reason as the above. People tend to cry when you tell them they shouldn't post so much crap. People fail to understand "general nonsense" doesn't mean "everything goes" (those words have been used by various people as arguments) General nonsense was created as a misc section, not a spam section. Not much that can be done about it though without upsetting the community. And after all without a community there is no site.

QFT...

I really think quotes in signatures should be removed, reason being some people are using them to put people down, and make them seem bad. I mean, it technically is putting down someone, except its not in one thread-its in every thread that the person will post in, so its more severe, get what I'm saying?

In my case, that person ChillyMyst has made me look like a total goose and disturbed retard. (Just search for him and you'll find his sig).

Really?

Thats somewhat an overuse of the system.
