Dell Intros AMD Triple-Core Phenom OptiPlex Computers Next Week

TG Daily reports that Dell has developed a new line of AMD-based machines for businesses under the OptiPlex brand. Scheduled for a global launch next week on February 19th, these new computers will be named OptiPlex 740 and 740 Enhanced. The OptiPlex 740 will come with either a single or a dual-core Athlon 64 and GeForce 6150LE graphics/chipset combinations while the Enhanced version will utilize triple-core and quad-core Phenom processors mounted on a GeForce 6150LE/nForce 430 motherboard with Quadro NVS 210S graphics.

If it does, then these will have great value to the consumer.

3Cores?
I don't sea why is this good for us, but probably it's good for AMD for the wrong Quads with a defect core, they will sell it!

Get a cheap Quad!

making 4 cores and killing 2 to sell cheaper aint a deal different than intel making 2 core then sticking a pair together to sell dearer..

its all about filling market slots with the minimum number of base products.. given time i recon there will be a single core phenom right at the bottom..

If it runs faster than a dual core (but not as fast as a quad), and costs just a bit more than a dual (but not as much as a quad) does it REALLY matter what's on the actual chip? How they perform remains to be seen but if AMD hypothetically sells a slower clocked triple core for $400 that works as well as an Intel dual cire OC'd to a higher clock that costs $600 will the presence of that one disabled core that does nothing but sit there really turn you off that much that you would opt to pay the extra $200?

I will never get why some people are so hung up on that and keep thinking of this as a quad. If you want a quad then buy one... if you can't afford the premium of that then buy what ever gives you the best bang for your buck within your budget. If that ends up being a triple core than who really cares, just so long as you're getting a good deal.

I like the idea that they are trying to sell their defunct quads because I hope and pray they will be at a good price point to compete with intel and give a little boost of performance. Also I think this is a heck of a "green" idea by AMD because they are not just tossing a bunch of broken quads into the trash but instead selling them as tri's, dual's, or whatever down the line; in turn cutting down production costs.

Ok, so what's your point? Semprons came from Athlon XP and Athlon 64 processors and were not that bad but celerons for some reason whatever they come from are cut down so bad that I wouldn't even wish a internet only PC to use them because 2 tasks kill it!! Now that they have dual core celeys you might be able to have 4 internet windows open!! LOL!

Whats wrong with Dell? They Make pretty good machines- once you wipe the drive and fresh install. the XPS 9100 Laptop i have runs pretty good for being 4-5 year old part.

actully its great, AMD plans to price these in the sub 150 market, where dual core is, and with multi threading being the future to be honest id rather have 3 cores over 2 in todays world. Its a perfect spot really and will for Intel to counter by either dropping prices on there quad cores or making a tri core of there own.

I thought these new Tri-Core procs were true 3 cores processors, and not a quad with a disabled core.

I heard they slowed down progress on the higher multi quad phenoms to make these, and I thought they were a true tri-core, am I wrong?
