Xbox 360 HD DVD Player Now Officially 49.99$

As part of the total HD DVD denial, Microsoft has now started selling its Xbox 360 HD DVD drive for $49.99. The optional accessory was also officially discontinued by Microsoft last week, so be adviced that its availability from this time forward, will be limited.

But the ones that are out will probably plummet in price, so you could get yourself a half decent HD movie collection with a player for under $200 I reckon if you already own an Xbox.

But I agree, not worth buying for future films... get a PS3 instead.

Just think, If MS had lowered the hd drive add-on to this price originally, not only would they have sold far more of these drives but the next gen format battle would still be going on as a result.

true, but then MS would have lost a ton of cash. the only reason thare are selling for 50 bucks is so that they wont lose a ton of money on the drives they have already manufactured.

Sony lost millions getting Blu-ray in as many homes as possible to establish the format and the gamble worked, what Sony lost on the consoles the will no doubt make billions being the gatekeeper of the next gen media format, kudos to Sony for the superior strategy.

It comes with the $20 Remote for Xbox 360, so that means your basically getting the drive for $29.99, add in the free 5 HD-DVDs and King Kong (so 6 free HD-DVDs), and they are basically paying you to get this drive. Also you can use it with your PC (even Apple), it uses USB. Great, cheap external DVD drive for you computer and Xbox, and it even plays HD-DVD.

They are giving it to you because it's dead. This would be like going and buying a graphics card that the gaming industry doesn't make games for.

Who cares? Your getting 6 free HD-DVDs with it. That works out to $8.33 a piece for HD 1080p movies. Not bad, considering you get a free Xbox 360 Remote Control, and a free external HD-DVD/DVD player that you can even hook up to your MacBook Air or any PC

Can you play Xbox games from this drive? It might also be worth getting for those with older Xbox's that had a tendency to scratch discs or give disc read errors.

No I don't think so. Only HD-DVDs, regular DVDs, and probably audio CD's too. Good though if you want to use the main drive for games, and the external for movies. So you don't have to take out your Halo 3 disc to watch a movie

I'm just not going to invest in it when I already have an HD player. My 2 cents.

EDIT: I'm not saying you guys shouldn't buy it, just in my opinion, not worth the money for me to buy.

There are 350 odd HD-DVD movies out?? This sounds like an excellent deal considering that you can stock up now. $50 for player with 6 DVD's + say another 20 for less than $200? That sounds like an excellent deal to me! Ravenas is just jealous...

Jealousy is the worst word that could be used to describe my mood.

Perhaps the word content would be better for this situation. Meaning, I am content with my HD player while others prefer buying dead products.

I think jealousy would be a better word to describe you.

Think of it this way Ravenas.
Many HD DVDs can also be played in a regular DVD player so in essence your getting 6 free DVDs for a $50 DVD player. That sounds like a deal to me.

I know you can use this DVD player with a PC, now curious, do you need to remove it from the case, just plug it in, whats up anyone know?

Now that this is the price I'm seriously considering picking one up.

Just plug the usb cable into your computer. You can leave it in the case. It will install automatically in Vista and you can access HD-DVD's with some proprietary software but I'm not so sure about xp.
