which one to buy and why please. will probably throw a small aftermarket cooler on it and can do an average casual oc.

8800GT....simple....why? at the resolutions your going to be using on that 15inch monitor the 8800GT is probably actually quicker, it's less than half the price, consumes half the power, can be bought with some pretty good aftermarket cooling solutions on it, I wont go on but you get the idea?

Guessing you game at 1024 on that monitor it would be a waste of money IMO buying anything better than a GT in anycase.

17inch....same answer, the GTX only really pulls ahead at resolutions above 16xx, it does beat the GT in several things, but the GT does the same in others, predominantly though at lower res, the GT wins more, your friend should really be asking......8800GT or 8800GTS, if he has GTX money and the PSU to support it, he would be better off with the much cheaper G92 GTS that beats the GTX in almost everything at the resolutions we are talking about.

Dont get me wrong, the GTX is an excellent card, just not a good buy today IMO for lower res.

The GT. It is ideal for producing images that max up to about 1280. And it will prolly due what you want it to, just like the GTX.

Definately the 8800gt, it will beat an 8800gtx when overclocked, it consumes a lot less power, costs about 1/2 the price... I could go on but it's 11:50pm lolz

9600GT or 8800GT will both be a solid choice and value for money, you cant go wrong, the 8800GTX still kicks ass and is beefy as sin, but useless and a waste of money when at low res the other 2 cards will do the same.

Get the p690 16x Matrox milinium its the same price of the 8800gt with the speed of the 8400 gs and it only has 128 megs of ram. I don't know why no one buys matrox anymore

actually for the price i would say the 9600GT is technically the better buy, however i would go with a 8800GT 512, as i am certain the extra 48 shaders will come in handy. and the price/performance ratio is still insanely good.

8800GT and 9600GT are both great for a 17", I would just stay far away from any of the older 8800GT's with the single slot heatsink that covers the hold thing. That baby gets hot as hell on load. I have an older EVGA 8800GT & it burns @ 97C on 100% load. I also have a newer XFX 8800GT with the smaller heatsink that seated right on the gpu & it doesn't go higher than 73C on 100% load.

I was pretty darn apprehensive about the XFX 9600GT because it basically has the same heatsink as the older 8800GT but it doesn't get any higher than 76C on 100% load which is great for a single slot in my book.

actually the really bad single slot cooler that covers the whole card is not used by XFX, they now use a bigger fan (15 blades as oppose to 13) and a bigger fan inlet hole, but the rest of the cooler is the same.

that is the cooler that came on my XFX 8800GT more than 3 months ago, and under 100% load in a hot aussie summer it never eclipsed 70 degrees with 100% fan.

so im not sure which 8800GT's use the single slot reference cooler anymore, but if you get an XFX one it wont be an issue.

No the 256MB 8800GT really sucks and nobody should buy it.I would much rather have an 8800GTS 320MB,8800GS or HD 3850 512MB over that.

Megasty Join Date: Mar 2008 Location: The Kingdom of Au Posts: 1,209 (0.64/day) Thanks: 76 Thanked 83 Times in 76 Posts System Specs	8800GT and 9600GT are both great for a 17", I would just stay far away from any of the older 8800GT's with the single slot heatsink that covers the hold thing. That baby gets hot as hell on load. I have an older EVGA 8800GT & it burns @ 97C on 100% load. I also have a newer XFX 8800GT with the smaller heatsink that seated right on the gpu & it doesn't go higher than 73C on 100% load. I was pretty darn apprehensive about the XFX 9600GT because it basically has the same heatsink as the older 8800GT but it doesn't get any higher than 76C on 100% load which is great for a single slot in my book. __________________ gods are created through gaming not 3dmark... Comcast is great, isn't it...
