Gaming mouse - still undecided and need a bit of help!

I've spent the last couple of afternoons researching, reading threads here and looking online.

Currently I'm using a USB Toshiba optical wired 800 dpi.

It isn't bad but I'm sure it isn't gaming standard. I have never owned a 'gaming' mouse yet and though this toshiba works well as regards the 2 buttons and wheels, it somewhat 'sticks' no matter how much I clean the surface and its pads, and it is somewhat too small for my hand and definitely waaay too light, it's so light I wouldn't know if it's in my hand or not!

I've seen a lot of posts in favour of the Logitech G5, however it's a bit 'old' now? Surely something better has replaced it? Is the G9 a good improvement over the G5?

About what I look for in a mouse -

- it must be slightly larger
- it must be heavier
- colour must be preferably black and blue / neutral grey or black and if it has designs/lights they must be blue
- it must be good for gaming and not stick and jump!
- it's pointer must move a lot compared to the movement of the physical mouse. I keep my mouse on the part of the desk on which my keyboard is, and there's like not much space to move it around. The way things are I end up 'kicking' the keyboard with my thumb while gaming (distracting!). I got only like 19cm horizontal space <---> where to move the mouse and that's 7.5 inches.
- wired. They're better for gaming and I don't want to deal with battery panic...

I'd prefer to purchase locally though the choice is limited:

G5 from Scan Malta

G5 from MTMalta I wonder the price difference from Scan? MTMalta updated this mouse 2005 I heard there was a new release of G5 in 2007? How do I recognise off-hand which is which?

Razer Copperhead from Scan Malta

Razer Deathadder from mmd-trading Malta

GM3200 from mmd-trading malta

Razer Lachesis from mmd-trading malta

Or from Overclockers UK.....

(I'm really liking the lachesis it's 4000dpi but I read that it's driver is crappy and gives a lot of trouble?) Is this true and common? Anyone owns a lachesis? What are your experiences on XP?

Logitech G9 from overclockers.co.uk

What do you think would be the best in my case? Budget's no problem for once... a mouse is never that expensive

The Razer Copperhead is excellent. Takes a while to get used to it... perhaps a touch too big. But OK after a week or two of familiarization.

The ONLY PROBLEM is click-bounce. Sometimes you want to close a program, or open a file, or edit a filename, with "one click"... but click bounce means MULTIPLE clicks are processed. This is a pain in the butt. So if you cannot decide between two winners... take the other NOT the Copperhead.

This review looked at the problem of click-bounce www.xtech.com/copperhead_review.html

P.S. I run the Copperhead using standard mouse drivers. I dont like the nasty funky razor ones. It runs fine with standard USB drivers. Just plug and play. Does anyone really use all those extra button features anyway?

The G5 is great. If you can get the Rev2 that would be cool(the blue one). I have Rev1 with one side button and rev2 has two side buttons.

Had the MX518 logitech but now got the razer's Lachesis, Diamondbacl and the Deathadder but with the driver now being sorted out by razer I am really enjoying the lachesis.

Right the difference I found with the razer and logitiech was is as follows.

The logitech to set it up is so much easier than the razer, but heres the difference with drove me to using the razer was the speed of the razer. It's almost a case of point and shoot in gaming with the razer.

I had the G9 for a while but didn't like either grips. If razer could maybe try and duplicate the setup of the logitech it would be the ultimate mouse.

I also enjoy the feel of the lachesis.

i am quoting myself from another thread, since i don't feel like typing everything. proud of not using mouse drivers for 5 years.

i recommend a good mousepad, otherwise, the money you spent on your mouse is kinda faded.

DeathAdder
DiamondBack
MX510
G5
MX710

I cannot recommend the G5, at least not after having a Razer mouse, and the MX518 is better than the G5. I came back to my DiamondBack after trying the G5 for a couple months. It is not a bad mouse, but not a good one either. Stay away from wireless, unless you are a casual.

The DiamondBack and DeathAdder are similar, the DiamondBack has weird side buttons, while it is fixed on the newer DeathAdder. They are both great mouse for any sensivity type, they will react to any mouve you make, being a quick reflex or not.

Please for the love of your mouse, disable 'Pointer Precision' in windows. I suggest the Mouse Fix also, which removes mouse acceleration. For the record, mouse acceleration makes your mouse move more or less DEPENDING on the speed you move it, applied to the distance you move. By removing it, moving 5 inch will always move the same. http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads...Mouse_Fix.html

Kovoet you mean that you're using the Lachesis and you got no driver problems? Everything works as it should? On XP 32bit?

I didn't put the MX518 and MX710 because I can't find them for sale anywhere... Are they oldish mice?

My final choice is between the Lachesis and G5.

There isn't much of a price difference.
The Lachesis is 4000dpi and the G5 2000dpi....... meaning the Lachesis is twice as better since I don't have much mouse space on my desk?

Any arguments pro and cons for the Lachesis vs G5?

I have small hands.. and use all buttons available (play CS:S again, using scripts etc.).
This is my third mouse from Razer. I can't complain. The only reason I bought the Copperhead was that I actually tried it for 1 week (friend has same), he had a Logitech XX earlier.

Some people might think "Bah, so many buttons.. what for?", well ever played a flight sim where you need to take you hands of the stick or throttle and search for a key? Yeah.. Same thing. I never leave my hands from the keyboard or mouse. I first bought the Death Adder by "accident". Returned it same day (didn't even open the box).

My other mice that I still have are (including non Razer mice, still have are marked with "*")
BoomSlang* (My first gaming mouse ever!)
Diamondback*
Copperhead (Using it now)*
Saitek Cyborg (DO NOT GET THIS ONE! Feels and looks "plastic", very poor performance, broke after 2 months )
Logitech optical (Got it for free, can't complain.. a bit big for my hands.
Note: this was an older optical with 5 buttons)
Roccat Kone, tried it for 14 days. Nothing wrong at all, a good mouse if you don't want a razer or Logitech mouse.

I use the QPAD|UC mouse pad with the feet supplied. The only big difference I felt is the sensitivity between the Diamondback & Copperhead.

However, I would really like to test the G9 from Logitech.

But if you really want to know how good a mouse is, don't ask others - test it yourself. That's the best and only way, because we all have different taste and different hands...

I have the G7, which is essentially the G5 without a cord, and I have a small area to mouse in also. From the side of my keyboard, to the edge of the keyboard tray is only 4.5", when the mouse is there it looks very small, and I have no problem moving the cursor from one side of my screen to the other on my 1680x1050 desktop.

it's nicky "2 times" tekie.

on another note I think it was a stupid idea to put the G5 on that Poll of course everybody is going to vote it, probably 75% of the entire PC Gaming world uses a G15, G5 or both. can't stand either of them well don't have much to gripe about the G5 but the G15 is another discussion, the Lachesis is too much for you.
