Apple Reports Record Second Quarter Results

Apple today presented financial results for its fiscal 2008 second quarter ended March 29, 2008. The Company posted revenue of $7.51 billion and net quarterly profit of $1.05 billion, or $1.16 per diluted share. These results compare to revenue of $5.26 billion and net quarterly profit of $770 million, or $.87 per diluted share, in the year-ago quarter. Gross margin was 32.9 percent, down from 35.1 percent in the year-ago quarter. International sales accounted for 44 percent of the quarter’s revenue.

Apple shipped 2,289,000 Macintosh computers during the quarter, representing 51 percent unit growth and 54 percent revenue growth over the year-ago quarter. The Company sold 10,644,000 iPods during the quarter, representing one percent unit growth and eight percent revenue growth over the year-ago quarter. Quarterly iPhone sales were 1,703,000.

“We’re delighted to report 43 percent revenue growth and the strongest March quarter revenue and earnings in Apple’s history,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “With over $17 billion in revenue for the first half of our fiscal year, we have strong momentum to launch some terrific new products in the coming quarters.”

“We’re thrilled to have generated $4 billion in cash flow from operations in the first half of fiscal 2008, yielding an ending cash balance of $19.4 billion,” said Peter Oppenheimer, Apple’s CFO. “Looking ahead to the third quarter of fiscal 2008, we expect revenue of about $7.2 billion and earnings per diluted share of about $1.00.”

Those are AMAZING figures. 33% gross profit margin. Given retailer margins and huge marketing budgets, that means they are manufactuing the iMacs and iPods at SUPERB prices. Congrats Apple

Major props to Apple for defying the recession, as well as creating great and innovative products.

I know what you mean, mine broke a while back and I had to get another one the same week, their portable players are bar none the best imo.

The mac computers however are a complete rip-off, but really this is a true testament to apple's fantastic market niche. They've made themselves so "cool" and no fuss in the eyes of many they can practically rob their customers blind and have them thinking they made the best decision ever. I need some jobs skills.......

+1. I personally have never been an Apple fan, but I know many who are and are perfectly happy. To each their own. Defying the recession is an excellent point Ravenas, kudos to Apple!

I've had my iPod for 3 years now, still works like the day I bought it. No hate here!

BTW, if you have a Mac pick up a copy of Leopard...Well worth the 129$ price tag (69$ at most school bookstores).

i got me an 80 gb video for free, i was never gunna buy one nor did i ever plan on buying one, i planned on selling it, but unfortunately my curiosity took hold and with in min i open it up and turned it on i played around with it a bit looked online to se what little programs i could put on it, well anywho i loaded all 70gb of music into itunes (which i hate btw) did all the syncing crap and i must say i was happy with the product it let me discreetly watch beavis and butt-head in math class so that was a plus, i also got a free transmitter , well anyway a few weeks later it died on me, so im like what ever and i sent it in then 2 weeks after getting it back from servicing it got stolen god i was pissed

anyway although it has its flaws it is a pretty nice product, and i would definately almost buy one now

I have to say if I was stuck using the ipod in its default form, I wouldn't like it very much. I got too much stuff to try to automatically sync. But ruckus, sharepod, and some settings tweaking have given me essientially unlimited free music to carry around in my pocket. And to me, that is worth much more than the $300 I bought it for (well, my gf did).
