System Specs

Computex 2008: Albatron

Albatron is showing off their PCI based graphic cards. These use the Geforce 8500 and 8600 GPUs as well as an additional chip on the rear, which translates the PCIe interface of the GPU to PCI and back. These are low profile and feature the usual spec's of their PCIe counterparts and use active cooling. Albatron also offers AGP variants for these cards. Considering the fact, that mini-ITX board usually come with a PCI slot, these should make for some interesting combinations.

The company does make other products as well. A 22 inch IR based touch screen monitor can be viewed and tried out as well. It supports multi-touch and should come at a siginficantly lower price as smaller, capacitor based touch screens.

Besides these parts, they are also showing off P45 and X48 boards, as well as mini-ITX boards for various chipsets, using Intel G945 and AMD 690G chipsets.

The touch screen is only a demo of a small unit and it's actually using IR technology, not resistor based touch screen technology. You can see a video of it in action here http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/Fudzil...84690927739634

I guess it's just that the input would feel more natural than using a mouse.

I think there were a few cards from the previous generation based upon PCI and PCIe x1, and they performed horribly compared to the PCIe version, but really, it is to be expected. Still, they were at least found to be a good compromise for some.
A mITX system would certainly gain from a graphics boost.

A PCI 8600 would be great for an older Linux box.

this PCI-E on PCI card system would rock for updating this POS Dell so I can use it as a backup rig for when friends come over
