Depends what type processor you want, an X2 or Phenom. If you want a X2, I would go with a 5000+ BE. I have one, and they are great OC'ers.

if you want a cheap sli amd rig..
MSI k9n sli 2 X 8600GT(if you don't have a card alrdy) 5000+ AMD Black EDITION 2 gigs is enough vista/xp (alot of people prefer XP[better preformance] but vista can do the same if you fix preferences) zalman cooler(overclocking the 5000+) cheap case.. If you aren't a hardcore gamer... just casual pick up a 790G chipset mobo.. and a phenom. |

Hey sal< i glad to see you took my advice and came over. Welcome to TPU!
I suggested a X2 6400+ which runs at 3.2GHz naively. Squirll, as for the BE i heard you can't hit over 3GHz?

Good motherboards are a dime a dozen, are you going ATi or nVidia? also are you going to run multi-gpu, or just single?
Edit: Also, what's your budget?

I can hit over 3ghz. I got 3.2 a while ago, but just didn't keep it there (1.475v I think), as there was no need too. I think cdawall can hit ~3.475 ghz, but thats with a good bit of volts.
![]() Overall, I think the 5000 BE is good. Its 65nm as well, so that's a +1.

whats the farthest you have gotten the BE stable? Would you suggest water cooling for it as well?

highest stable i have got would be 3.2ghz @1.52v on a cool day.temp with my HSF was 42c full load. I would recommend water if you wanted to run high voltage (1.5+) 24/7 just for the life of the CPU but a good air cooler would be just fine if your not running as high voltage. Keep in mind alot of the BE get the same clocks with lower V-core. I think i just didn't get a good binned chip and also my mobo is showing its age and isn't overclocking as good anymore.

Go with the 8800GT, it will give you better performance than a 3850.
If you're not going with a phenom I wouldn't bother with a nForce700 chip, you'll be fine with either a 500 or 600 chip. You should be able to find a good asus or giga board for under $100 What's your full budget?

I would still get something that 100% supports Phenom so if one day he does want one then he wouldn't have to get a new board to get the full performance and overclocking out of one

True, I guess as a biproduct of my extreme-poorness I automatically look for the cheapest thing availabe for relative performance.

Hes tight on money, i suggested AMD because its cheaper right now overall compared to intel. And this rig is for his mom's house, his primary computer is at his dad's.

not really, when he built his first rig we stole most of the good components, Hes basically starting at scratch.
