Power Supply Question...

I'm trying out my first build and I have so far picked out:

Hard Drive: Western Digital WD1600AAJB Caviar SE 160GB Hard Drive - 7200, 8MB, ATA-100 EIDE, OEM

Motherboard: EVGA nForce 680i SLI Motherboard - T1 Version, NVIDIA nForce 680i SLI, Socket 775, ATX, Audio, PCI Express, SLI, Dual Gigabit LAN, S/PDIF, USB 2.0 & Firewire, Serial ATA, RAID

Processer: Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Processor BX80570E8400 - 3.0GHz, 6MB Cache, 1333MHz FSB, Wolfdale, Dual-Core, Retail, Socket 775, Processor with Fan

Case: NZXT ALP-001 Alpha ATX Mid-Tower Case - Clear Side, Front USB, Audio, eSATA Ports

Video Card: ATI Radeon 9250 (I dont know much of the info for this, but it's a PCI slot and runs WoW well, and I have the box and manual I think, so if you need more info just say so.)

RAM: (Suggestions please...)

Sound card: I dont know if I need one.

OS: Windows XP Home edition.

Power supply: Thats my problem...

I am kinda confused with SATA and ATA right now. Are they completely different or are they the same with a miniscule difference. Also, I'm not sure of what else I require for my first build. My budget right now is around $600.

. Any suggestions/changes/information is greatly appreciated

first up, i hope you are planning to upgrade that video card, because it will work but all the rest is a bit of a waste! especially if all you want to do is run WoW, which you don't need anywhere near as much power for.

so if you need help, we really need to know what you intend to use this thing for.

Bump your CPU and mobo down a notch and get a real graphics card, running a 9000 series redeon would be a waste on that stuff. Free up $100 dollars or so and get an 8600 gt or maybe a 8800gt.

first thing i see is i would not suggest a 45nm on a 680i board, it can be done tho. Second go with the A1 or A2 rev not the t1 series. the A1's and A2's have lifetime warranties while the T1 series do not. Your 680i is rock stable if you get a good mobo, if its junk you will know. I used to run the 680i series, if you need help i could lend you a hand over clocking it.

As for your HDD, WD is a great hdd maker next to Seagate, but i would suggest either a 16 or a 32MB cache Hard drive that has SATA not IDE, it makes a world of difference.

I would say Crucial Ballistix would do you good. When you get them run mem test through them to make sutre there solid.

Your PSU should be based around your system, if your looking for a 8800 series card or above ide say 700Watts should be more than enough. make sure your +12v rail is strong enough to power your graphics card and the rest of your computer as well.

What kind of heat sink are you planning on using?

Bump down???

I agree it would be a waste for your system not to mention it would probably create a bottleneck as well (more then likely that card probably has an AGP slot though)

And the video card (Radeon 9250) is a PCI slot.

To Fraid: My budget is around $600.

And to pepsi: What exactally is a heatsink and wouldnt it come with the processer? Or is that just a fan.

seems like you picked an IDE drive, that might be a problem unless your dvd burner is SATA, look for a SATA hard drive instead.
The heatsink is what keep the CPU cool it does come with the processor unless you buy an OEM. Unless you want to overclock the stock heatsink should be good enough.

Just a quick advice: NEVER use the nForce 650/680i SLI Motherboard series, unless you are ready for problems/bios updates constantly and failing hardware. We have sooo many customers coming for help at a daily basis because of the nVidia based motherboards.

the dual core Wolfdale Processor work ont he 680i Series mobos, however anything quad core won't.
If you want anything i would suggest sticking with a 65nm chip, but thats just me, i look for a stable chip not a new one. The 45nm can't handle the voltage like the 65's do.

The heat sink is what goes on top of the processor, if you plan to overclock that is.
