Goodbye NVIDIA nForce?
If the report from Taiwanese industry observer DigiTimes holds ground, NVIDIA could be wrapping up its chipset division. This was revealed by sources at top motherboard manufacturers who have attended a meeting with NVIDIA where the company sought support from them to continue the chipset business. The manufacturers didn't show obvious or in other words, positive support.
Here's how the exit of nForce could affect the industry and you :
This means Nvidia needs to find a way of licensing and enabling multi-GPU support on motherboards using Intel and/or AMD chipsets fast. Otherwise it will have to cede the top-end of the graphics card market to AMD, which now has the benefit of Crossfire. Update: NVIDIA has responded to the DigiTimes article saying that they are not leaving the chipset business and have no intention of doing so. source Source: DigiTimes Last edited by btarunr; Aug 1, 2008 at 07:17 PM. |

I hope this translates into Nvidia making thier graphics cards to SLi on any dual PCI-E motherboard. I would love for Intel to help them out.

obviously you will see intel sli chips but i dont see why ati and amd would make sli chips for its motherboards
so this means the only solution is some form of sli on the graphics card itself instead of the motherboard i wonder how ali will be done and this means we will have to suffer ati/amd and via chipsets motherboards only if we go amd cpu

of course they did. All companies will make it seem as though things are going great all the time.
Nvidia purposely doesn't allow sli on anything other than their chipsets. Finally it's going to bite them in the ass (maybe lol) |

What I'd really like to see NVIDIA focus on is a proper Atom chipset (with an NVIDIA IGP). Unfortunately it appears they're not interested in the low-end market, which is a great loss for everybody.

What did I tell ya? I was right that NVIDIA will cripple. I think this is a great thing since if they pull it off with Intel chipsets that means we don't have to switch mobos for SLI or Xfire anymore!

Its about time. Those NV chipsets were a pain in the ass to OC & the stability even at stock was laughable at best. They should dump that chipset while the dumping is good. Bring on the X58.

interesting
So,if nvidia gives sli license to intel, we wont be forced to buy a nforce board for sli.
If nvidia dosen't give the sli lisence to intel,it wont get the nehalem lisence. i think nvidia will go with the fist choice which means,by by nforce. |

Thanks for the update bta, i was shocked to see that NVidia will be going out of chipset market. I love their chipsets, most stable and OCable.
NVidia is doing pretty well with their chipset sales, why would they go out of business. Crap posting from that website.

How retarded is Digitimes? Seriously. Uh, yeah, Nvidia is just going to stop making a bazillion chips that make money. Riiiiight. I think they need to lay off the crack during office hours.
And Nvidia has already called it groundless and debunked it.

Interesting however nv didn't address if it was true/not true that motherboard makers are not supporting nforce in their meeting. Sure nv may not be exiting the chipset business but the motherboard makers response is IMO more important.

That is incredibly unlikely. Nvidia may not push chipsets like intel, but those chipsets also aren't cheap pieces of crap.

Sigh NV haters are every were.
but here is what NV had to say, just like i posted earlyer. Updated - A response from NVIDIA's Bryan del Rizzo: The story on Digitimes is completely groundless. We have no intention of getting out of the chipset business. In fact, our MCP business is as strong as it ever has been for both AMD and Intel platforms: Mercury Research has reported that the NVIDIA market share of AMD platforms in Q2 08 was 60%. We have been steady in this range for over two years. SLI is still the preferred multi-GPU platform thanks to its stellar scaling, game compatibility and driver stability. nForce 790i SLI is the recommended choice by editors worldwide due to its compelling combination of memory performance, overclocking, and support for SLI. . . . We're looking forward to bring new and very exciting MCP products to the market for both AMD and Intel platforms |

^^ A serious question here: Who in their right mind goes out of their way to buy a foxxconn? I've seen them in some low quality OEM machines, but that's about it. And after reading the story about their BIOSes....

Im glad to see an update on this. I shutter to think of AMD and Intel being the only "real" enthusiast chipsets ( not counting VIA on this one ). IT would get stale fast.
