Engineering Windows 7 MSDN Blog Surfaces
Microsoft has launched an MSDN Blog for the Engineering of Windows 7, dubbed E7 for short. The blog, hosted by two Windows 7 senior engineering managers, is aimed to inform "...enthusiasts, bloggers, and those that are the most passionate about Windows... what’s in store for the next major release of Windows."

It's taken them 6 years to create Windows Vista and make it backwards compatible with all other Windows versions. How can they add another name to the compatibility list and actually make an allegedly better (since it's a replacement for Vista) in half that time?

If MS is actually willing to listen to the people they are making this available for then Perhaps the next version of Windows will be worth it (off the bat not after multiple service packs). |

I am beginning to wonder if Win7 is nothing more then Fiji and not blackcomb/vienna.
Fiji is just a derivative (branch) of Vista using some sort of Media Center theme Blackcomb/vienna in a nutshell is nothing like Vista and, MS next gen OS. Time will tell. |

since there are so many O/S's to pick & choose from - one would be wise to keep an open mind but i guess its the same as everything else - no matter how much the majority community will detest something - there will always be a small minority otherwise know as 'Fanboys/Fan girls' & others that will sing its praises despite its epic downfalls.
if u like it then good for you - dont try to force your ideals on others who are also entitled to their own opinions, choose not to follow the crowd & join with its sheepish mentality. (Note how i did not mention ANY names in this post.....)

![]() Doesn't matter if Vista's code quality is even directly the fault -- if customers have to upgrade all their apps (or buy completely new versions, or worse -- their apps will no longer work), then Vista's not going to do well. Just look at Intel's refusal to use it internally within their company.

i guess microsoft internally thought vista was gonna suck so they are releasing something not even 7 years down the line. So much for the RCs and Betas which were better than the final Product

They can't screw up with Windows 7, even if they try. Vista makes that possible. All they have to do is revise the WDDM for performance 3D/gaming purposes and streamline the kernel from the accessibility and security perspective and it will be a winner. I can imagine it will be on par with Windows XP on the performance level.
This relatively early introduction can't have a positive effect on Vista adoption rates right now. Many people who are thinking about getting Vista will just decide to wait another year or so, since you can expect Windows 7 betas to start coming out as soon as next year. Which begs the question: what will the 10% to 15% of people who will be running Vista at the time do? Be pissed I imagine, since here they will have an OS that might be as fast or even faster than Windows XP, yet with more features than Vista. Yet, they spent years fiddling and tweaking Vista, installing large software libraries of applications and games only to abandon them and have to reinstall them onto a new OS. (Yeah, I bet you can upgrade from Vista to Win7, but who would want to do that? Clean install = smoother.)

I have to say that MS has failed with this blogging initiative. We all know from previous "design specs" that the final product often falls short. It's not that the final product isnt good, just that what is presented in advance and what is delivered are two difference things.
And I dont want to listen to corporate PR spin. |

I believe this is just another OS that will force you to buy the new DX (11). I dont think this is Vienna but hey could be terribly wrong (Hope i am).

That 10%-15% probably won't even know, at least most of them. I still run across people using ME and they just don't know any better. Definately a clean install : ) |

easy Windows 7 has been in progress since 2002 actully. Vista had to come out, it wasn't even planned till 2005. Before 2005 project Longhorn didn't exist, project Blackcomb did, Blackcomb was turned into Vienna and Vienna became Windows 7. Vista borrowed the Kernal from Blackcomb and got it working along with many features of Blackcomb but lacks alot of the planned ones. They did this because Windows XP SP2 slowed them down and they realized Blackcomb wouldn't be ready in time, so work switched to getting Vista out so consumers would have something.

Do we have confirmed proof of this? Back in the day word was that DX10 would be an availible upgrade to XP like DX9.

no Me was a fine OS. Some rules to follow. Don't use vxd drivers, they are known to cause problems with Me, they where made for 95 and 98. 98SE and Me need WDM drivers though alot of manufactures didn't bother to do that. Do not use 16bit code in Me, the 16bit layer is there but vastly disabled, this caused alot of crash's becauase the OS supports 16bit but it can not run it properly because the DOS layer is disabled most of the way. Use ME with drivers written in WDM and avoid apps that have 16bit code in them, and Me is just as stable as 98 which IMO isnt that stable either.

In Seattle the Gamefest is hosted. On the Gamefest Microsoft shared some abstract details on DirectX 11. DX11 will be supported fully by Windows Vista and arrives in the year 2010. Some new features:
