Centrino 2 Overclocked to 4 GHz Thanks to Aggressive Cooling and Software

A desktop-replacement laptop using the Centrino 2 Platform, Intel's highest dual-core mobile CPU, the Penryn-based Core 2 Extreme X9100 to be precise, was overclocked to 4.00 GHz with help from aggressive cooling made by CoolIT and Intel's Extreme Tuning Utility. Seen in the first picture is the laptop seated on an unreleased notebook component cooler made by CoolIT. The cooler uses external thermoelectric couple (TEC) and air cooling to draw heat away from the laptop. Despite using overclocked settings using this cooler, the CPU reaches a scorching 50° C.

The cooler releases in January 2008 and will be priced around US $120. This feat was also helped by Intel's new Extreme Tuning Utility (Iron City). Intel's Dan Ragland used the software to overclock the laptop's CPU to over 4GHz, stably. He commented that the notebook-cooler added around 500MHz over and above what's achievable by using the laptop's cooling alone.

jeez look at the size of that cooler. Think it's small enough to still be considered a carry-on? Can you imagine the looks you'd get if you busted this out on a flight?

LoL, so I guess we are going to start benching entire laptops too? Not sure I'd want to OC a laptop. It would only take one spot on the board to not get good cooling and OOSP!

Is Iron City available for all new Intel CPUs? I want to play with it with my new e8500.

As far as laptop temps my NC8430 right now is sitting at:
CPU: 50c
Board: 44c
Board: 54c
Board: 30.7c
HDD: 32c
Using MobileMeter

That's 50C after the TEC cooler + OC. Do you happen to use it?

I think this won't work on any Laptop as normally the internal CPU ist covered with bad cooling systems.

The Laptop looks like special build for this, but i thought about that before
Replacing the "Service Cover" from my Laptop with pure copper to get max OC.
well maximum weight was included

What i've done was building a copper base for my lappi (old alienware) and donwclock it that i could use it without a fan (ok it lost its original cooling from AW but that s*ck anyway) and at home we put a Zalman NC under that to aircool it and OC, even the mxm-gpu
wich was of cause upgraded too

Until we see what is between it, i think we can't say anything about that system except: nice idear

3.06 to 4 ghz is mightily impressive even if the cooler itself is massive.
