I had no idea they used so much technology in cricket.

Now it makes alot of sense.

The one ive seen a few times with a few members who have been a member for while and they ask a basic tech question is "you have been here since whatever starting date and ya dont no what a ... is. Im sorry i must of missed the bit were it says about minmum puter knowledge after certain amount of time as a member. Dont answer the question just make the person feel stupid why dont ya when its easy enough just to answer it.

Yeah, we all have different levels of technical/knowledge in the computer field.

I do it for a living and have worked with Macs and Windows platform for over a decade but I know very little about linux. I read a book about Ubuntu, but I can only answer basic questions about it. So being illiterate with linux myself, I see where you are coming from.

It would be annoying if someone posed a question I couldn't answer and treated me like I was an idiot. I thought most Linux distros could use NTFS.

I think one can read NTFS but not write it?

People didn't listen to erocker. They didn't listen to Polaris either. So they had to face W1zzard. Polaris is a very down to earth mod. He's always willing to justify every moderator action of his, big or small. You've pushed him too far. W1z didn't like this one bit. Therefore, repeated voilations invited W1z. Had Polaris run the same infraction fest, I bet there would have been much more drama there, or here (if that thread got closed), given the situation.

Look at your avatar man. I never was apart of this but just by reading above it shows u want respect.. "Swallow you crippled bitch" doesn't show a slight hint of respect in there.

Im sure its a joke, and many probably find it amusing, but don't come off like you're a saint of some sort.

Lol, it's clear to me that you dont have the slightest understanding of the word "respect".....you post a thread of rememberance, your intentions may have been honourable IDK (but doubt that very much) but by linking what you did was a clear cut attempt to insult and detract from the whole point so that thread was purely deliberate flamebait IMO and actually very disrespectful...you just simply are slapping every single person in the face........I dont know if you were born a total dickhead or if you have just had to work very hard since but whichever, well done it's worked well and you have succeeded, pat yourself on the back because you truly have managed to show everyone your true colours.

Please report this post.....I gladly will take my first ever infraction for you!

Edit: If you are so dissapointed, close the door on your way out!........and to save you the bother, I have reported myself! I am kind of thoughtful that way.

I actually think that avatar is a bit offensive, considering we do have some younger people visiting tpu.

Maybe there should be some "rule" regarding avatars?

And intel igent,if you are that down on tpu then leave..........

To enable signatures and avatars, go to your UserCP, select Options, and in the Thread Display options, enable signatures and avatars.
* You may have an avatar of no larger than 150x150 and 19.5KB, and it can't be animated, unless a super-moderator/administrator put it there. Any violations of this rule will be removed at moderator discretion, with little more than a link to this announcement as justification.
* You may have a signature that contains whatever is on your mind. However, we must ask that you keep profanity, vulgarity, insensitivity, and flaming out of your signatures. Any signatures that bother us will be changed at super-moderator/administrator discretion.
* You can link to wherever they'd like in your signature, within reason. We will mainly ignore said signature links anyways, unless they are brought to our attention. If you report a signature to a supermod via PM, we will take a good hard look, PM the offending user about it, and if necessary, change it.
* You may have a signature picture. To enable this, go to "upload avatar" in your UserCP, and upload a signature picture. Then, once it's uploaded, click the "insert signature picture" hyperlink under the picture you just uploaded. It must be no larger than 100x500, and it certainly can't move, unless a super-moderator/administrator put it there. Again, all violations of this rule will be deleted at a super-moderator/administrator's discretion.
.

As you can see, Dan has all ready asked for us to do so. Then if we don't and a mod finds it bad. Boom it should be gone. We are trying to better TPU not bring it down in a firey 0uproar because of a mother of the son that goes behind his back and see's a avatar and thinks she should step in and throw Montel Williams type people at us.
Just 2 pennies.

Generally TPU has been a very good forum, I've not contributed much (as in only asked questions, mainly because I'm a computer newb compared to you guys). I have no problems with the vast majority of the moderators on here, the only one I've had a problem with was Dan the banjoman and that was more because I asked a question about turning my motherboard's speaker off and he said something way over my head, this was more a problem with me than him though. Something to make the moderating on here more efficient may be to to put up a scale of 1-10 or something on how well you understand computers, this would have solved my problem with dan, the only other problem I have with him is him blowing me up with rockets on TF2...

thats a good idea but how could we ensure that all users rate themselves correctly on this 1-10 scale?

make other users rate them, similar to the thanks system. just have a 5 star rating that anyone can anonymously input stars into, and the average is shown.

Have a list of things showing what you would define as increasingly advanced computer knowledge or what you use it for, so 1 could be that you can browse the internet confidently, if you couldn't you couldn't find TPU so you wouldn't be getting any Zeros.
With 10 being you understand how binary, and all the various parts of a computer work. I'd personally put myself at a 3 or on the scale as I can solve the majority of software related problems in windows (at least ones that average computer users come across) but when it comes to hardware I'm clueless, I wouldn't even attempt to OC anything because I'd be afraid of breaking it. Unless you're confident with hardware you shouldn't be able to have a score of either 5 or 6, perhaps to establish this you should ask a question on whether or not you've built your own PC before.
Something that would give at least a very basic understanding of this would be adding to the system specs an option for custom built or the manufacturer or your computer.
The system of making other users rate them sounds quite good, however you can't tell what someone's knowledge extends to just from one post.

Friends give you a high rating, 'foes' (ppl you probably had a bad time with in a thread) will vote you low.

good point but idiots would spam that with the ol' create a fake account. I guess that the stars system indicates to new comeers that we are the experienced computer users, I mean someone for example tatty with his custom star thingy is easily recognisable as an experienced user who knows what he is talking about. Maybe if there was a way of identifying what that person specialises in such as networking, overclocking etc ?

yeah but then we'll get people who think they're OCing masters for getting 1GHz out of a core 2 duo, or networking people who think they know everything because they can use an RJ45 crimper. IMO, the best methods are like the thanks system, where OTHER people do the rating.

of course, the method i mentioned before could really hurt some peoples self esteem.

Hmm well what about people who create guides, I'm sure kursah created an overclocking one maybe he should be allowed to have such a title given to him by say the mods who vote between each other on who deserves such a title.

But the end result comes out in the form or a graph, right? Example, I may have oodles of 1337 skills (like redirecting a country's nuke missles from its target to the ocean), but if I pissed a few people off in the forum, and get a low vote from them, there's no real indication left that I have a high know how to say a new-comer seeking help. I think you're getting close to the rep system some forums have...now that system is pretty lame and is abused (not like the Thanks system we have isn't), but rep is worse. I think status-quo is the best solution.

yeah i agree with that. its very hard to come up with a balanced system that indicates skill levels/usefulness, whilst being even remotely accurate.

actually - this "user-knowledge" idea is rather intriguing.

I agree, y'all have pointed out the biggest flaws of it - it could easily become readily abused by others . . .

perhaps instead, we could impliment some sort of test or quiz, where the final score we obtain gives us a ranking on a 1-10 scale. Perhaps also we could have it where after 30 days, you can retake the test - just in case you recieved a low score, so that way it's not permanent, either.
