i like the idea of 10 skill levels defined by some text and the user can select his own level. of course coming up with those questions will be hard and a bit vague

I agree, y'all have pointed out the biggest flaws of it - it could easily become readily abused by others . . .

perhaps instead, we could impliment some sort of test or quiz, where the final score we obtain gives us a ranking on a 1-10 scale. Perhaps also we could have it where after 30 days, you can retake the test - just in case you recieved a low score, so that way it's not permanent, either.
also shows your learning, say 30 questions but they are randomly produced out of 100, it doesn't tell you what answers you got wrong though, prevents people from cheating.

Considering the scope of computer skills, also what about people cheating and looking up google I do think that a rating system of people's skills would be a good idea and if its not well recieved then it can be removed.

Where does that leave the ppl who do not have super strong puter knowledge like my good self? I regard myself as a community person and remember there is more to tpu then just tech Gn for example.

ironically if someone did that they would actualy learn the solution to the question and thus be able to answer it.

@ trip of course people like us would still be able to partake in the discussions but I think it should be a position earned by a few select members who really know what they are talking about, you know they have shown to excel in that area e.g danthebanjoman seems to know a boatload of stuff about networking and stuff that would make my head explode.

I think that instead of a quiz that the mods and w1zz should discuss and vote that this person <insert name here> is recognised as to have sufficient knowledge in a certain area. I don't want it to be an elitest thing where thier word cancels out everyone elses opinion but for newcomers they would be able to see that this website is a thorough website dedicated to helping them.

Yeah, that sounds like an easy task. After we rate those 32,000+ users individually, we'd need to grab that razor for a shave. Even after that, people will allege favouritism, bias, etc.

Ok well back to the first idea I had is that people who write guides should be identified.

Also i didn't mean interview each one individualy i meant when passing through the forums or through recommendations and someone does seem to show that they are experienced. Also it would be better if it was for more permament members who have been here for about a year or something. Not perfect i know.

Back to square one. People who write guides, useful forum content in general, are 'thanked'.

Imagine if, something points to me as a "sound card expert" for example, I'd be flooded with PM's instead of people starting threads for sorting out problems quickly. Doesn't that defeat the idea of a forum? Since people solve problems for fun, voluntary, it's standard issue that the "experts" show up whenever a thread asks for. For example, start a thread on graphics cards volt-modding, chances are Largon shows up. So there's no need for a "special recongnition". It sounds very discriminatory and divisive.

The whole Skill level thing does sound good, but like bta says, you'll be flooded with people that just think your the MAN... Sneekypeet gets enough out of noobs that see him go into a thread and they see he owns two blood iron boards. Then I get one from it since they hear one was from me...
Skill is a good thing, but Bta is right. It could take away from the idea of what TPU is.

I feel if the guide is done well enough, and talked about with the mods, it could be sticky.... If not, then throw it into your sig and build on it.

i know thats been happening but since i cant place any emotion into a piece of text it has two meanings, one being that i suggested it and the other being that we should stick with the current system of placing guides in our signatures. I was referring back to the fact that people already do that and that we should stick with it.

I kinda agree as well to this point - thankfully, I don't recieve a ton of PMs regarding sound issues - but, like was pointed out as well, those of us more familiar with certain areas will usually be drawn to threads related to that type of hardware . . . I'll usually check out an audio related thread before anything else.

As to the idea of googling the answer - well . . . we could always make the questions timed. You either know it, or you don't. Scale the questions as well, make some questions carry more weight than others - i.e. being able to answer "CPU GTL voltage can be set to increase OC stability. What specifically does GTL voltage set?" would earn a heavier weight towards your final score, as compare to answering "What ATI GPU is found on the HD4000 series?"

I don't think the "quiz" idea is to prove experts in one area of technical knowledge, only to prove a basis of one's knowledgibility in general.

But, trip also brought up a good point as well - what about the users that don't feel themselves to be that knowledgable, but are still fully contributive members to the community?

-EDIT-

just wanted to point out, though, I feel our 'thanks' system does a fine enough job by itself . . . but perhaps we should review the system as well. It's not as abused as the 'rep' system can be elsewhere, but we have our share of problems.

Specifically, users who hit 'thanks' when they agree with someone else's post. I can't say that I'm not guilty of it, either.

Perhaps to ease this mild abuse, we could remove the 'thanks' buttons from GN, News, and perhaps a few other subforums (where most of our debating, arguing and ranting take place) - but leave it in place in our hardware subforums. And just to keep everyone happy, would it be possible to make an 'agree' button in GN, News, etc, that adds a username under a post (like the 'thanks' button does now), but doesn't add to any user "points" at all?

Yeah, I agree here. I don't think it's tpu that has zero respect here. It's members who come here only to flame, insult, and argue. Go ahead, take a walk.

Why not include a "was this post useful?" button?

This would work much like the thanks button, but it would show up in a visual format, maybe the colour of the stars would change or something similar. also anything in GN is void, to stop people from ranking others because they told them what show was on tv at a particular time, the Was the post helpful would only include the tech stuff.

that might work as well.

TBH, though, I don't really think we need to add any new user ranking system (i.e. - the quiz). I think our 'thanks' system is a good foundation, we just need to revise it a bit more. It needs some buffing and polishing, y'know?

I don't get the impression, though, any of us regular users are here entirelly for the thanks system or any popularity standing. But, our number of thanked posts, though, I'm sure have some impression on new users joining up - unlike how we regulars just overlook it at this point. I've got a strong idea of which members are helpful in which fields and topics, so the number of thanks any of y'all have is trivial to me, y'know?

Maybe the current system is good enough as it is I think maybe the main problems with the website are probably with individuals who don't follow the rules and thats what the mods are for they do a bloody great job as well.
