Interesting PALiT HD 4850

Look at this card

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814261027

See these pics and see how short it is compared to reference card , ( see the distance from the end of the PCI-E connector) , even when the Palit card is zoomed in more . It has to be a good 2 inches shorter than reference HD4850 .

Now Why do companies make such large cards, when everything can be done in a short size ?

nice...getting back to x850 sizes lol! That'd be nice, hell stuff that thing on an old GF5xxx/ATI 9xxx sized PCB! That'd be sweet!

I saw that card on Newegg also when I was shopping for a 4850, I didnt get it because of the size of it.

Does that card perform as good as the reference 4850?

As I see it Palit cut off some of the power supply components. The reason people make the cards so big is because they need space for the components.

This wouldn't surprise me at all, probably because of manufacturing costs, and design considerations, probably the same reason ps2's were huge when first coming out then being redesigned to the smaller model, actually come to think of it, it would work well in a smaller case, and possible not cover up a NB or SB at that rate.

well i recall the 9700 Pro having components on both sides of the board, i think thats the best way to do it if you want a smaller board.

Because you can't make a single slot cooler for a PCB that short that provides coverage to all components (it won't cool). Besides this card has no VRM cooling....bad.

No. it's not using the same ultra-hot running VRMs as the reference design. It doesn't appear to be targetted at OCing enthusiasts, but the cooling on the mosfets are fine for stock or near stock.

Then this is just a cut-cost design by Palit. Firstly I see only 2 phase power for vGPU, no cooling for the MOSFETs which are towards the anterior end.

Yeah, pretty much. It does happen to be the lowest priced 4850 on Newegg. But it should still be fine for stock or near stock operation. Like I said, it's just not an OCer's card. It would be great for those with space limitations too.

We may never know, the card may wind up being a strong overclocker.

With memory chips left to convectional cooling and exposed MOSFETs, I don't find an indication of that. However, this card could compete well with the cheap 4850 Sapphire made, with a slightly similar design.

Surely if ati designs the board for their chip its the best design, the smaller versions are cost cutters i reckon.

yeah but most people dont give a damn about OCing, they just want a small, quiet card.

I seriously am shocked at how you people are so obsessed with the giant monsters, smaller is better!

agreed, atleast this will give you the performance of HD4850 without taking too much space in your case

bet it has more layers on the PCB and thats why they could make it smaller.

also as for the mosfets 10% of PC buyers/builders oc so 90% of people can use this card without an issue lol

anyway, i say its better because it fits easier into smaller cases. everyone whines when new cards come out bigger (8800GTX, 4870, etc).... and here you all are whining someone made one SMALLER. gah! it hurts my brain!

They are whining because it could yield smaller oc's but honestly, if I were to get one then I don't think I my self would be able to take it that far. I honestly like the card I wish I would have went with it my self
