The fate of the old processor

Oh yes I think you guys know what this little processor has in store for it

220 grit done, copper is all exposed. Here is what it looked like to start I had already done some work on it a long time ago (basically just brasso to make it shinier.

starting out

copper beginning to peak out

copper clearly exposed

just a little more to go

finished with 220

done with the 220 grit the copper is fully exposed, now I just need to make it shiny

on to 400 grit, I was going back and forth about whether or not to use 320 or just go up to 400. I decided on 400 and am glad. Only took about 5 minutes to finish it up.
this is from about 30 seconds of sanding already very little cross hatching left.

and done

here you can see a slight bit of reflection starting

so that wraps it up for 400 grit now on to 600

600 went by really fast too, I was really surprised by it!
still some crossing going on

and another almost done

all done, hard to tell the difference between 400 and 600 from pics but there I can see a big difference

not a big improvement with the reflections

and on to 1500 grit hopefully it doesn't take too long...

wasn't too bad. There was a nasty scratch in the middle of the chip that took a while to get out but the whole thing still only took about 5 mintues. here you can see the scratch that I was talking about.

all done reflections are becoming quite clear

Ok so the brasso is taking a long time but it is steadily getting better

worked with the brasso for a while and it is slow going so I brought out the big guns :P

so I've been working with this off and on for a couple hours now (probably only a half hour of solid polishing) it is really slow going but I'm making progress so here is what it's looking like now mostly taking pics of things reflecting in it

Durp I found out why that was taking so long I forgot to use rubbing compound! I may yet finish this tonight!

I'm going to spend more time on my core 2 quad because I actually use it. This was something of a test you could say?

I like how it turned out but I think I could do better, and I plan to on the q6600!

yeah I'm going to, I'm uploading some right now from the 220 grit. Got the copper all exposed time for 400grit then 600 then 1500 finally brasso.

you are going to be spending a ton of time with 1500 grit coming right from 600, just saying you may want a step or two in the middle there

yeah I know but they didnt have 1200 or 1000 at ace so i'll work with what I have

i tried actual lapping paper on this PhenomII 960T, and i heartily recomend it, i still used harsher 1000 to start but the lapping paper(2grades) was amazeing stuff another good thing to use is car bodywork cutting compound as a finisher its great.

I always go to a automotive store, they usually have a larger variety of sand papers, people doing body work need a lot of different grits.

Put the processor back in (decided against wasting thermal paste) it runs toasty now, probably because of the lack of paste? Under full load it got up to 80! This is just cause I'm not using paste right??

Yes, you need thermal paste.

yeah I wiped a little off of the other processor and even with that tiny amount the temps are down to ~55

Don't want to dismiss your work (time consuming) but all that for a 1-3c better temp at best

Back then (8-10 years ago) it was ok to do this as we didn't have much of good cooling out there & no heat pipes or so rare that it was really expensive to buy one

Now a days we got much better , cheaper & efficient cooler & some much better Tim that doing this type of works is pretty much worthless & unsafe (brasso) to do

Anyhow it's your time to "waste" not mine & all i can said is good luck!

idk, when I did this with my friends a couple years ago I seem to recall getting ~5c cooler temps.

It leaves an wax film best results would be rubbing compound and ultra high grit sandpaper.
