to crossfire or not to crossfire

i am currently upgrading the rig in my specs.

i am going the following



3770k

ASRock Z77 Extreme4

G.Skill Ripjaws Z F3-2133C11D-16GZL (2x8GB) 16GB DDR3


Using current monitor and SSD in specs.




my question is is it worth me upgrading to crossfire???

2 X Gigabyte Radeon HD7970 GHz Edition 3GB (i currently own one)




please let me know you opinions, money on the second card is no real issue

If you are thinking of running uber resolution or multi monitors it may have the resault you want however you will need an uber CPU to power these in crossfire to get the best from them. [Like all things in life when Crossfire works or is supported life is great but when it is not supported or has poor driver optimization life is crap]

I'd say no. For one monitor setup it is useless and we are probably 4-5 months away from the next gen of cards.

no. + as others said you need a high end cpu to feed two 7970.After you change the cpu go ahead and buy a second gpu and be happy about it if money are not a problem for you.

And they should fine on the 3770k better then amd

Running 2x7970 at 2560x1440. Very much worth it in my books (if money's not a major hassle).

If money isn't a hassle, hell, get a 27" 1440p monitor too. Good tread in TPU about Catleaps 27"'s somewhere.

Uh, 1440p is alot more demanding than 1080p. And just so you know, my single 7970 does pretty good on my 2560*1600 30"

I have bought the cpu / mobo/ ram as stated above.

the monitor in my system specs i have only just bought a few weeks ago so i'll have that for a while.

(i should of mentioned i am selling my current cpu/ mobo/ ram for $300 so the upgrade to the Intel system listed is only $300 AU)

and for the GPU if i feel the need i can always buy it later if the need arises.

Two 7970 Ghz Editions for a mere single display 1080p setup is WAY overkill and a waste of money. Spend it on a nice storage drive that has 2 - 3 TB or a receiver vs onboard sound. Hell, maybe even games on the holidays, but another 7970 is just throwing it away.

Have the money to spend? YES crossfire. that's not even a question. The obvious answer is yes. It's just about whether you want to spend another $500 for a second graphics card.

Personally I would say, one 7970 is enough for any gaming rig. Wait a year or two and then buy a second one when they cost $100.

Because if you have $500 to spend on another graphics card, then you have the money to spend on a better screen that could use the extra graphics power.

If you have the money they why not? I would rather go with a pair of 7950s and save yourself a few bucks personally. Clock for clock the two perform very similarly.

I like being able to force high amounts of aa and set a framerate cap for a really smooth experience.
