Just installed my new Sammy 840 Pro. Wow!!
Allright, so I've been eying the ever increasing more popular Samsung 840 Pros series for some time now even though my free Intel 520 cherrville was doing me good, I just kept hearing more and more how awesome the 840 all around and of course being a geek, I was getting jelly and having desires, as well as I wanted more room for my games instead of having to delete them to keep open space up for SSD longevity reasons.
Well, I managed to snag at long last a 840 pro 256gig for a great deal last week on Newegg and it just came in today after I got back home from working on the road, I was so excited to compare em! For my first SSD, this 520 has been a really great drive with nary an issue. ![]() I decided to go with two popular benchmark utilities so I could compare the two on my own setup. I deleted a few games, ran CC cleaner and ran Intel optimizer to get best results show here. Again, sure blows away my WD Caviar Black . ![]() Wanting to do it the right way, I did a complete OS rebuild as I just like doing a full rebuilt once a year to get rid of bugs, registry issues, dead file etc.... I installed latest drivers for everything including Samsungs software and firmware. Sure does look sexy in there! ![]() WOW! I couldn't believe the difference benchmark wise! ![]() Now im totally pumped! about getting some of my games installed and really seeing what this bad boy can do! Samsung's smartphones are kicking butt, I love my Note 1 and Note 2! Their SSD's are kicking butt and their TV's are really nice! I wanna replace my aging Sony with one. Samsung FTW! |

Nice speeds but, you should be getting more write speeds out of the first drive.
There might be a problem with it or it needs a firmware update.

Damn, I'm so jealous now. I have wanted to change from HDD to SSD for a while now but the prices aren't feasible yet in my opinion, coz i want to replace my 500GB HDD with a 500/512GB SSD but the price puts me off, I think I'll try sticking it out with my HDD for 2 more years and wait for prices to drop, coz I dont want to mix the two I just need 1 and SSD is my salvation.

Dude it would be a bit easier to manage but you really don't need a half-terabyte SSD allowing you to keep everything on it. Use that 500GB mechanical for file storage. Once you get an SSD you will wonder how you waited so long so don't make that even worse on yourself. :P
I first bought a 30GB Vertex for $100 in like May 2009 and could never go back. On those occasions I need to boot my rig from a mechanical clone (overclock testing etc) it's like torture. FYI if you are set on a 500 or so gig SSD volume you could always buy like two 240s and RAID 0 together. Faster than a single too (though twice the chance it dies).

The Intel drive is 120GB,while the Samsung is 256. You cant directly compare performance of two drives if they are different capacities.SSD performance increases with the number of NAND packages.
This is why I never ask for anything under 240GB, even if its free. |

You have a point re the higher perf in higher NAND packages but compared to mechanical drives all SSDs rock and are an essential component IMO now that prices are more reasonable.

Had the newest firmware and it's on my SATA6 Intel port, the same one my Samsung is on now and the Intel software states all is well with the drive*shrug* Quote:
Bwaaa? Why limit yourself? That's what im doing now and it works great and I don't have to worry about my sensative data being lost on the SSD and have storage space for all my digital goodies that I don't need high speed for and wasting space on my SSD with. My Intel now Samsung SSD with my WD Caviar Black is a great combo for my needs. Even thinking about buying a big, 7200rpm laptop 2.5'' HD so its smaller, less heat and can go in my SSD rack rather then lying under my optical drive on silicon mounts to reduce vibration and noise ![]()

I kinda like the Idea of having a 512GB SSD replacing my internal 500GB HDD but I'm always open to options 256GB/320GB SSD doesn't look so bad to me I have considered getting them for a while now, so if i find a good deal I'll jump in so fast. |

Well unless it's USB 3 (or eSATA?) being on an external port will bottleneck it terribly but thats not really OT.

It doesn't have that much of read and write rate, its SATA 2 plus the read rate is some where around 170MB and write is at around 90-100MB its on of those first SSDs got it from a broken down DELL XPS that was on the way to a trash can, the WD case is USB 2.0
