7850 / 6850

Going to start to build my AMD system this winter and was curious should i just go with a 2GB 6850 or buy a 7850?
My question is, is the price for the 7850 going to drop below 200 and also why is the 7850 double the price of a 6850, i thought they were the same cards in specs, only with the 7850 supporting 3.0

This is the CPU i am buying:
AMD FX-6100 Zambezi 3.3GHz Socket AM3+ 95W Six-Cor...

As for the MB, not sure yet, but it i plan to go 8GB memory.

The 7850 falls in between the HD6930 and HD6950. The 6850 and 7850 use very different architectures (VLIW5 vs GCN respectively) so even thought their shader processor count might seem similar their performance isn't.

Also, what resolution are you going to game at?

7870 is about 30% faster than the 6870 at all resolutions. I guess it's a matter if you believe it is worth it or not.

The 7850 is ALOT faster, especially when overclocked.

I had a 6870 and my 7850 @1250 mhz pullls double the FPS of my 6870 @ 1ghz in heaven. ( the 7xxx cards do love Heaven benchmark though, but your looking at 50% boost at least over 6870)

yes, but you are also going from a 1GB card most likely to a 2GB 7800 series. That right there to me is more important than 30% perf increase as a 7800 series can actually use the 2GB of memory.

Nothing against the OP, but doesn't anyone ever read the excellent reviews at this site before posting questions like this? It would have taken less than 30 seconds of looking through the HD7850 reviews to get lots of great performance numbers comparing the 7850 with the 6850--that's less time then he spent typing his question. Why are we always so helpful when we could just point them there for hard facts? Are Wizz and his people just wasting their time to review all the hardware that they do?

Great point but, no, definitely not wasting his time. His reviews pull in tons of page views which in turns pulls in ad dollars.

My question is.
You are over 4 months too early. I will answer the question then, I'm a busy person.

The summary puts the HD7850 over an HD6950.. by 6%...

Speaking of which, go for a 1055t rather than the FX processor you mentioned.

You'll get 30% better performance.

It will probably cost less as well

+1^

FX series only offer cores not performence even and intel i3 2100 can surpass a FX 4100!

@pantherx12 ; you always enter with a great success in a thread!

You need to learn forum etiquette my friend. Also reading the OP post stated that he was looking between the 6850 and 7850. Not everyone needs the latest and greatest. In fact the OP started builing his own PCs about 2 years ago so i think he knows what he is doing by now.
