Just Cause 2 Problems

So I decided to get Just Cause 2 on the Steam sales because I wanted it on PC (played the hell out of it on PS3). Downloaded, go to max all my settings, run a benchmark, and I'm getting 8 fps. EIGHT. Decide to go in game, more or less the same thing, max of 20. Disable everything, comes down to it that AA is the problem. Constant 60 FPS without AA, with it at 8x I'm down to 20. What gives?

i7 2700k
7970 3gb
16gb DDR3-1866

I should have NO problem maxxing this game at 1920x1200.

I think it may actually be some settings in Catalyst making it go weird, screwed around with it and it got better. Not sure what I did.

Ah the age old A camp software debacle. No matter how many rave about their hardware, you inevitably see these kind of posts popping up. GPU value has a lot more to do with than merely how many FPS per dollar you're getting when they ARE working right, esp when their latest offerings need considerable over-volt OCing to pull ahead of the lower priced competition.

Amazingly after 7 years worth of such troubles on two of their cards though, I still get tempted by some of the bench charts I see. Then posts like these bring me back to reality. So thanks for that.

BTW, what FPS exactly is "got better". You have me curious. I can rock the game on my GTS 250 @ over 40 FPS and get plenty smooth enough gameplay, as long as I don't go too crazy with settings. I can use pretty high texture detail though.

It's a very well optimized game since it uses both procedural rendering and blurring on distant objects. It's pretty incredible that a game that came out a year earlier has a vastly larger world, no level loading screens and much better texture detail than RAGE, at less than 25% of the file size.

I have some base jumping tips for a few of them that involve difficult and steep takeoff trajectories from buildings btw.

Turned out to be just a game profile for another game somehow causing problems with this (I was experimenting a bit earlier since I just got the card) game. I just deleted the profiles and now all is well.

Wow, that's weird. GPU game profiles should not conflict with one another because they are based on entirely different executables to launch them. Then again, we are talking Catalyst here. When I had my ATI cards for several years, I could never even successfully get a game profile I made to actually engage. I've heard others say the same during those builds of it.

So what FPS are you getting now in JC2?

79.03 average on The Dark Tower, 120 or so highest with 60 lowest. I will leave Vsync enabled for a constant 60 though because it looks better to me. This is with everything maxxed at 1920x1200.
