I believe you need to check your sources of info
No wear problems, and my lightly used Seagate backup hdd can boast of throwing more errors than my heavily used sata2 Corsair ssd.

Get an ssd; my recommendation is Samsung 830 (or wait for 840 Pro) because they are awesome, fast, and reliable!

Right now the price and size is their ownly downside.

I know previously they had issues that had to do with not being a mechanical hard drive, but I am sure those are long gone now. (something to do with windows read/write errors)

Not true! SSD's are awesome. I was nervous about them too, but im glad I took the plunge. Makes everything run better IMO, MY laptop boots so much faster and runs longer, and my desktop is a monster, in large part due to my OCZ Vertex3. just treat it right and it will serve you well, just like any other piece of hardware. Intel, OCZ, Corsair and Crucial are all good makes. I dont have experience with any others however.

Early SSDs had a short life span and reduction in performance after a while.
Some mentioning about the sandforce controller in it's early days.

I can vouch for the Samsung series as well.
I have the 128GB 830 model and it is incredibly fast with loading and file transfer.
Windows loading screen doesn't even get to merge to show the windows logo besides on rare occasions.
Windows shutting down takes about 3-4 second on average.

Very noticable super fast file transfer speeds even from SSD to HDD.

Also Samsung SSD comes with a Utility which optimizes windows settings for the SSD so you do not have to go around disabling things.
Apparently Windows 7 is supposed to do this by itself when installed on an SSD but in my case it did no optimizing for the SSD by disabling features.

With updates to windows 7 it does optimize what you need. All you need to do is set your BIOS to AHCI or RAID. If you have Intel 7000 chipset then trim will work in raid now. Last time I did it it turned off defrag on its own

I adore my Samsung 830's their speedy, but not the fastest on the market, but they are reliable and haven't had a single problem with them.

Go for it, but I suggest that you wait till black friday and see if you can pick up a cheap 256GB one.

Prices have drastically fallen recently, so I'm pretty sure there will be something around then as well.
