Defragging On Windows 7

I'm defragging my hard drive for the first time using Windows 7, and the progress keeps doing "passes", Pass 1: 0-100%, then Pass 2, 3, 4, etc. I'm just curious how long this goes on for?

No idea. Dont use windows defragger. I find they usually suck. AusLogics Disk defrag is great. I recommend it.

Hm, I didn't know a defragger could suck lol. Can you briefly explain what that program does that the Windows one doesn't?

windows one just puts the files back together

this one will put them back together and then try its hardest to compress the disk that way their is no space inbetween data chunks.

I use O&O Defrag Pro 11.5.

Most defraggers have better algorithms than the windows defragger, so they can do the same job much faster. They also give better representations of the drive, some (like OOD) offer different defrag methods, and automatic defragging.

Like my counter parts, I have never turned on Win7's defragger....i wonder does it still suck?

My 650GB hard drive was "32% fragmented" according to the Windows 7 defragger. It took about 25 minutes total to finish defragging it. As for the "passes" I mentioned in my first post, there were 7. I wonder if thats a coincidence since its Windows 7.

I use perfect disc 10 myself, it also has a file optimization feature that is done in windows boot mode.

If you are doing a clean install on a whole drive (Not partitioned) it optimizes files by moving the system files to the very outside of the disc and restructures sytem pagefile so that it too is on the outside for faster read write times. thats usually what i do as soon as all the updates and drivers are installed to every windows install i do. it makes a huge difference, especially in older machines running xp. I have a 5 year old toshiba laptop thats doggone near indestructable and did that upon installing the os right after sp3 and the drivers, and the differentce was about 12 to 15 seconds less from power up to desktop.

a huge difference. plus it has a stealth mode that runs constantly so i defrags as it operates. you can select the amount of cpu usage and for the lappys, battery mode.

but auslogics is very good, and its freeware

Cool, now run a different defragger and see how much stuff Windows did not clean up. 25 minutes ain't bad though.

From what I've been told by friends, the 7 defragger is improved over vista's but still suffers from incomplete defrags especially of system files and large files, and it is still very slow. I wonder if it's behavior when VSS is involved has improved any at all.
