X1900XT, not reaching requested clocks

Well after about four years i've decided to get back into the computer gaming/oc world, forums, yada yada again. I purchased an ATI X1900XT that sits nicely in my DFI Lanparty NF4 SLI-DR board. Power is not a problem, it's supplied by a PC Power and Cololing Turbo 510W.

Well i'm thinking about rma'ing this card pretty soon. FEAR ran just fine, but Quake4 and HL2 crash. In the catalyst control center a 612 mhz VPU clock is requested, but only 500mhz acheived. Same with memory at 720 requested, 594 received.

In ATI Tool I can monitor the temps get up to seventy degrees pretty fast when testing for artifacts. Ambient is around 45. I've updated to the 6.3 drivers, downloaded the microsoft tool pack crap, and think everything is sound except the card.

If I know the thing is o.k. then I think I'll take off the coolers, clean with acetone, replace the ghetto ati TIM with artic silver 5, and possibly replace the fan.

Thanks for the help,
nm

lol again? the card has 2 clock modes, one for 2d, one fore 3d, thus in the destop a 2d environment the card is clocked at 500/600 and in a 3d environment the card clocks back up to 625/725. this is nothing new it was the smae for the x1800 series lol.

Eh, yeah, I had an X1900XT and RMA'ed it. The performance was great, but the overclock was piss poor. The card in question has two operating modes, like the previous post metioned. It has separate clocks for 2d rendering and 3d rendering, likely to save power and idle cooler. Good idea, really. The catalyst control center is crap, really. If you want to overclock, or at least try with an XT (the highest I got with the XT was just over XTX speeds), ATiTool is the way to go. There are several read-me's and FAQs just on this site alone that should be of assistance. However, if you just want the settings -- what is it, exactly? 620/720, it seems? -- then just use the card. Everytime you launch a 3d game, it will be within a few marks of those numbers.
