my card is about 100 years old and......

its nearly dead.

its a first generation nvidia 8800GTS 640mb.

its currently water cooled.

day to day stuff its fine, but it crashes while playing steam games mostly.

so, my question is - What card do I get next, ATI or Nvidia, what model??

I haven't a lot of cash spare and I need it to be comparable.

I'm only using a 19" screen.

thanks if you can help.

give it about a month or so and both companies will have their latest models out. Your card may be old but it's still not to bad.

100 years old... nah. That card is STILL good, rather it would be if it wasn't borked. Try and find a cheap replacement to hold you over until ATi releases the DX11 5000 series cards later on this year (in Sept. I believe). Look around on Ebay or ask around in the B/S/T forum here, I'm sure someone's got something decent laying around for you.

Yeah wait for the 5xxx series from ati coming next month.

I thought you were going to say you had an ati rage or something

Also, sice the 8800 is BFG it should have a 10 year warranty so you can RMA it.

Have to agree - an "old" 8800GTS is still probably one of the better cards around, even today.

Sure its not going to win any top end awards , but its still equal, or better than most cards on offer below the top $ bracket.

If you Google around a little you will also find a LOT of other ppl complaining that mainly STEAM games are crashing, and nothing else.

It may not be your card at all....

Steam games are like that alot of the time.

Also, try and wait. For me personally i am trying to get a GTX 260 even if the new cards come out, should perform great in upcoming games.
