Letting the 7900GT rip

The folks over at VR-Zone have overclocked their 7900GT, and achieved an amazing 800MHz on the core and 1063MHz on the memory. This is an insane overclock of 80%, but more interestingly, it was done with air cooling! That just goes to show that you do not have to necessarily invest in expensive cooling just to overclock.

The 7900GT really seem to be high clocking monsters. Tips and tricks here.

Yeah that's AWESOME. For a great price, and all the features of the 7900GTX with lower clocks (unlike the hardware specification-lowered 7800GT), that is a deal of deals. So 800mhz core and 2ghz RAM? JESUS that's fast, and it has no limitations since it's got all the state-of-the-art specs on it.

I would still rather buy a 7900 GTX 512 mb for 499$. .

Why quake? Pay $200 more for a higher stock speed? That is literally (as far as I know) the ONLY thing the 7900GTX has over the GT, but obviously an 80% overclock is quite a bit more than a 50mhz overclock like on the GTX

The pcb is alittle different on the 7900 GTX, uses higher quality power modules and other stuff plus 7900 gtx is automatically guaranteed to run at 650/1600 you can voltmod and get even higher than the 7900 gt plus you will have 512 mb of ram vs 256 mb of the 7900 gt.
call of duty 2 f.e.a.r quake 4 doom3 all really need 512 mb of ram to run really great.

well uhh the 7900GT has 512mb RAM too, and with a little voltmod I'd assume you could clock a 7900GT just as high as a 7900GTX. And even if the 7900GTX DID clock a couple mhz higher, for $200 more for....maybe 100mhz higher overclock, I'm pretty sure that's not worth it.

A 7900 GT is 256 mb of vram 512 mb of vram will cost as much as a 7900 GTX.

BTW i havent seen one yet, all 7900 gt ive seen are 256 mb, ive seen 512 mb 7800 GT but not a 7900 GT.

the 7900 gtx is overall better deal, more ram better heatsink guaranteeded clocks ,.

but dude, when they were first released I'm pretty sure the main available configuration was the 512mb version, and it was VERY cheap. Nowhere near 7900GTX. I heard they sold out quick, as in they were limited and bought up fast (think both the GT and GTX were).

EVGA DOESNT MAKE A 512 MB 7900 GT BFG DOESNT PNY DOESNT XFX DOESNT GAINWARD MIGHT BUT IM NOT IN THE UK,. I HAVE NEVER SEEN A 512 mb RAM 7900 GT ONLY 7900 GTX ARE 512 MB.

if you are spending 350$$ for overclocked 7900 gt only 256 mb ram you might aswell get a 7900 gtx 512 mb more futureproof.

exactly, I agree with wickerman. You seem to have a big temper quake, but I know that the 7900GT has a 512mb version, just every time I ever mention anything that DID happen in the past, somehow it's wiped from the universe and no one ever has any idea what I'm talking about (for instance, chapelle's show season 3 commercials I saw 2 years ago).

My friend just got a eVGA 7900GT, and he says the only difference between it and a 7900GTX is:
1.2 vcore vs 1.4 vcore
256 mb of ram vs 512 mb
different stock speeds

eVGA makes high quality boards, and it wouldnt surprise me if they used the same board for the 7900GT as the 7900GTX. Great option for overclockers

i would never buy a evga product again, i had a agpx8 evga 6800 GT went bad after a month took it back got a PNY crap warranty but it seems they got higher quality cores than evga, it overclocked to 450/1200 from what i remember the evga only went 400/1100 it started artifacting,. ! i dont care about warranty if i was gonna buy a video card it would be by PNY , my friends pny 7800 gtx 256 mb can reach 550/1400 fine without vmod my bfg tech 7800 gtx 256 mb can only do 510/1380 before it starts artifacting. it just seems pny is the closest to nvidia reference you can get seems like they get the best cores. every one ive seen overclocks better than evga/bfg cards.

eVGA lifetime warranty covers overclocking and using an aftermarket heatsink. Ill take that over a few mhz.

well here's my video cards i sold quite a few gf3/gf4 x850xtpe 6800 gt

cards i currently have, every card still works fine. i dont see how peoples video cards die i even overclocked my voodoo3 3500 in the picture pci lol all working today flawlessly, id rather take better overclocking core than lifetime artifacting core warranty because ive never had a card die on me.

eVGA's warranty is no different then any other companies. The other companies warranties only cover defective parts, not ones killed by the user, and so does eVGA. As long as you return the card to the original way it came out of the box the warranties will be in effect. If you send a card with anything other then the stock cooler on it to eVGA you better believe they will send it back to you and not honor the warranty.

It also seems to be that the PCB on the 7900GT is shorter then the one used on the 7900GTX. I don't know why this is, but it is shorter.
