My husbands desktop

His computer started running slower and slower.. Antivirus was all up to date and working etc.

He was backing everything up to an external hard drive as he wanted to re format it.

I believe he thought he was cleaning up his computer and he may have deleted some essential data by mistake. It was shortly after he was cleaning up things that the computer ran slower and slower and slower...

So.. one night he couldn't get the disk drive to come out and my usually quite subdued and tollerant husband 'lost it'.

He his the top of the tower at the front a few times and then the front of the tower at the top (I was in the loungeroom and heard and it was a pretty loud few hits)... Then when the disk slide slid out.. he grabbed it and yanked it out and threw it across his office.. (it had been giving him grief for a while not opening)

Now the computer wont start.. I checked out the motherboard and nothing appears to be blown.. The cords are all plugged in properly (from hdd to motherboard) and the casing, to my suprise is very well supported and strong.. Still.. I am sure the tower got a few good 'jolts'...

When I start the computer (fixing 3 at the moment.. ) it doesn't pick up hard drives or anything.. like there is nothing for it to read.. 0 0 0 0 are the answers when it should be picking up and displaying stuff.

Is it doomed?

Hi ,

I have the same experience with you

i think you can solve the problem by :

1. Replace Harddisk data cable (ATA / SATA) with the new one

if doesn't work , you can buy the new harddisk , because the harddisk is broke .

there are 2 reasons :
1. the data cable has problem or
2. The harddisk broke .

so , in the bios , it show 0 0 0 0 0

^^

Sounds like the OS data got corrupted on the HDD (from the anger-trip) so you will probably need a new one unless you can hear the disc spin on the existing one then all you need is another ribbon/cable.

hi Kymberly_S try this Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.38 it might find something your anti virus program won't
(and it's from here with no annoying popups, although if you want full protection it will need purchasing sorry )
and comes recommended by me (someone who has to clean up other peoples mistakes)
of course if your drives caput it won't help sorry, but it might help in the future
(p's update it if you do download it)
enjoy

Maybe it is his inner-self that wants a new PC and destroys the old one.

You know I did the whole hands on hips .. "you better not be thinking that you can go buy a new one now!!!" thing.. Because when he gets a new computer it's like Gollum with '"My Precious' and any attempts to communicate with him is a secret agenda to try and steal it from him (which it is lol)...

Why can't one of you live next door so I can just come with some cash and get it/them fixed.. lol.. not my husband... the computers!!

give him the eye as you lady's like giving us men and make him .

Well besides from checking the cable to the HDD to make sure it has not worked it self loose does sound like a HDD issue.

Is the DVD\CD player on the same cable ?. If so MAYBE the DVD player screwed up and stopping the HDD from being detected.

I find it slightly shocked that a woman is telling a man about how to fix a busted computer (almost)
when its supposed to be the woman that gets mad & flusterd then calls tech support or gets a man in to deal with it.

we need more women like you out there!!! not only can you cook, you can repair a pc! so there is a god!

Just read all your posts.. along with useful information.. You guys are very funny.. I had a good laugh which was just what the doctor ordered as I am suffering a lung infection and am on everything so I can breathe. How does the woman sound now that can cook and fix computers lol... I'll tell you.. breathless.. stop making me laugh lol..

Anyway.. life is punishing my husband for giving me more to do and he is also sick.. Day off of work and is snoring his head off. Don't you love the winter/spring flu's..

ASAP I am going to get the computer plugged in and listen.. and wriggle cords... and maybe check the jumpers on the DVD drive and HDD.. If I can get this machine running again I owe you all a 'high five'.

I will answer questions then too

Thank you for all your great ideas and laughs. Appreciate you time.

well it looks like these guys got ya covered but one thing i have to ask...did he tear ot the cd drive tray?

if thats the case id do my troubleshooting like this

1. Unplug the dvd/cd drive entirely..no power no data cable
2. clear CMOS
3. if the Hard drive is really showing 0 0 0 0 in the bios then its probably damaged to me sounds like a head problem in which case its time for a new one.

Yeah.. he was mad because when he pressed the button on the cd/dvd drive the thing would never open. That's why he bashed it.. Then when it did open and the tray slid out... he grabbed the tray and ripped it out.. you know, to teach it a lesson for trying not to come out.. now it has been denied the right to return and sits across the room in hubbys office.. all sullen like ..

How do you clear CMOS? Thanks

if you can tell us all what motherboard he's got we can post pics and a quick how to do it,
without knowing what it is it's harder to tell you ,although to be honest if the hard drive is dead there's not much point till you get a new 1

like mad max said if you know the mobo we can tell you what pins will do it....if you want a real simple methode you can unplug it and pull the battery on the mobo out for like 30sec.

Hi ,

To clear CMOS / BIOS :

you can see the battery like this , then you can put it off for 1 minutes and

you turn on the computer , without the battery

then , turn it off , then you can put the battery again .

then you can setup the bios again .

Here is a tutorial can help you to understand :

http://ramanathan.wordpress.com/2007...ios-passwords/

Good Luck^^

You apparently have several PCs so pick one that works and plug the suspect HDD from the thrashed PC into the known good PC and see if the HDD shows up. Be sure to use a known good data cable too. That will determine if the Hubb's Hard Drive is still functional. If the HDD is good then look at the cable and where the cable plugs into the Mobo that got beat up. A physically damaged port can be the prob: try another port if there is one.

A HDD is a cheap fix.

If you still experience issues then take Hubby's rig completely apart and lay the pieces out on a non conductive surface like a desk and plug everything together and test it out of the case: could be a piece of the case shorted out the board at any rate out of the case you can properly inspect everything for damage.
