HL2 MUST be activated via internet

According to a Gamespy Interview, HL2 will require activation via internet when installing:

Doug Lombardi: During installation the user will be prompted to authenticate the copy and create a Steam account. After that is complete, the single-player and LAN games do not require an Internet connection.

WTF?! Did they think about ppl without an Internet Connection?? And if they think they can prevent piracy with that - I'm sure it can be passed by a few days after release.
