Okay here is the problem I bought and installed about 3 months ago a Samsung SH223F 22X DVDRW SATA Drive OEM For my parents. My mother copies a lot of movies with DVDfab. Now everything was working fine for the past 3 months until a week ago or so. She can listen too and copy music CD's. But DVD's won't even register. Here are the symptoms......

1. Will recognize CD's and copy data and Music off CD's

2. Won't recognize DVD's at all.

3. Won't burn DVD's at all.

4. Get's in to a load loop won't get past loading on DVD's.

5. 3 times drive did not even show up in My Computer.

Things I've tried to fix it......

1. Update Driver/Firmware (no updates available)

2. Switch SATA to different SATA connector including slave setting and master.

3. Checked to see if recognized in CMOS(it is)

4. Checked Power connectors

5. Checked DVD's in other computer

6. Replaced SATA cable with another one.

7. Ran virus and spy ware scan.

As you can see I've done a pretty good job of trouble shooting. The only other thing I can think of is running a cleaning disc. But it's not like Samsung is a cheap brand or anything. I'm thinking it's dead. But before I scrap it and by a new one I thought I'd throw it out there. Let me know guys and thanks :banghead:

Her computer Specs:
AMD x2 64+5000
Gigabyte MOB GA-MA78GM-S2H
Samsung SH223F 22X DVDRW SATA Drive OEM
Western Digital 500GIG 7200RPM 32MB cache
Sapphire ATI HD 3850
OCZ 700 Watt PSU
O.S. Windows XP SP3

Thanks again....

I had a similar issue with the very same drive. I just RMA-ed the drive back to store and they gave me a new one right away. New one is still working great. Holding fingers crossed...

I think theres either something wrong with that series of drive or its just a bad batch cuz I have the same drive & sometimes it gets really fussy about what brand or the actual disk its burning on - often rejecting about 5-6 blank disks before accepting 1 for the job.

mine still reads, runs & burns dvds though so theres no need to panic yet....

a pattern might be occuring though

My sammy did it all though it was 3 years old. But i ripped the thing apart and cleaned the lens and rails and all working 100% once again :).
If it's in warranty just send it back to them but i have a feeling it will cost more than a new drive lol.

Check there site for a update.

Yeah her dvd+rw drive does that too. It gets very very particular on which writable cd you have in there. Then you'll be lucky if it burns. Hope you don't end up having the same problem I had.

As far as returning it..... Yeah that's what I thought I'd have to do. But I just thought I'd throw it out there. But actually the cost of returning it I might as well just buy a new one. After you get through with waiting and the cost of shipping. To much a pain in the ars!

Thanks guys

well being Samsung - you'd think they'd be above all this. I hope my drive doesnt decide to 'break' before I can get a new burner in (My list of much needed replacement parts is growing... -__- ) Ive got a spare IDE DvD-Rw but its white so wont go with my black 902 case.

but the burner people have been recommending is the 'LG GH22NS50' which is very similar to the Samsung SH223f & the great thing is its very cheap too.

havent heard many complaints about this yet... Hopefully. Samsung can release a firmware update that will fix the issues of course if it is a firmware issue & not hardware/component related.

I'm not sure of the model number. But in my Rig I have an LG SATA lite scrbe DVD+RW. It's never let me down. I think when I bought it ... it only cost me about 38 bucks. So if your looking in the future keep that in mind bud. But yeah I know what you mean my list is always growing too. But that's mainly my fault considering I can't stop tinkering! LOL But I think we all have that problem that's why we write here LOL HEHE
