DVD Codec

another one know of a freeware DVD Codec only.

Problem is, that I just want a DVD Codec and none of the others like divx, xvid, mp4, etc...

I keep finding packages with a million codecs and I only want the one

Why do you need a DVD Codec, almost any media player can play that?

Use VLC or KMplayer. They should work straight 'outta the box!'

K-Lite is what I use. Those and VLC player work great together.

Ninja edit: they have a 'lite' version for minimal codes if you google and check the download page.

corp machines! for a recent meeting we required a laptop that could dvd play back and as WinXP Pro or Vista Business doesn't come with a DVD codec out of the box, force me to install software that my manager and I was not happy with, like VLC as we cannot install this on all machines due to licencing.

so a freeware DVD Playback only codec would be preferred, just can't seem to find on through google

he said he couldnt install that. Im not sure if there is a free DVD codec as they use some container to decode them, like vorbis or something. If google is not coming up with anything, perhaps you are searching wrong. try uhm....shit..what is that website....softpedia.com I think it is. Try looking there.

DVD streams are stored in Vob containers. Very different from Vorbis, which is an open source container for Ogg (audio) and Theora (video).

What licensing issues are you having with VLC? I thought it was open source...? Maybe I'm missing something.

Beg your pardon I misread the fact you can't install VLC - that's weak, that'd have solved your issue straight out.

its some of the codec that are contain within the package, some can be used for personal use only as for corp we would require a licence.

yes VLC is open source, but not all the codec's are. VLC is just a pretty front end at the end of the day.

I get the corperate issue.

I'm not sure here, but I thought that by VLC being open source means that everything that VLC uses is open source. I didn't think an open source program could have parts that were closed source. VLC uses its own codecs (rather than external ones) and because of this I thought these codecs were open source implementation. Moot point though, you're a corporation.

I think the reason you're not finding anything is for two reasons. 1) Mpeg 2 decoders have to be licensed. Doesn't someone own the rights to Mpeg 2? 2) Plus if you did find some freeware, what are the chances that it's licensed for free commercial use? I don't think there may be any free stuff, especially since its not personal use.

Use Media Player Classic Home Cinema. It is fantastic, portable, comes in both flavors (x86 & x64), and can play almost all common formats (including divx, xvid, mp4, H.264, mkv etc.) without any other installation.

open source doesn't mean free user to all, some devs do put restriction on there software to prevent there work being stolen from them and being put it to a fully licences product. this is why alot of open source software is free for public and not for corp.

I've spent countless hour reading many disclaimers and not all the codecs in VLC are approved for corp use.

There is also a portable version of VLC player that runs off a flash drive so you don't have to insatll it on the corp pc.

Good idea Exeodus. Or like Microsoft says:

If you're running Windows Vista Home Premium or Windows Vista Ultimate, DVD capabilities are included as part of the operating system. If you are running Windows Vista Home Basic, Windows Vista Business, or Windows Vista Enterprise, you can enhance your DVD playback experience by purchasing a DVD decoder pack or by upgrading to a more powerful edition of Windows Vista.

So you have 2 options:

1.)Upgrade your copy of windows

2.)Purchase a DVD codec from a 3rd party manufacturer.
