AMD Updates CPU Schedule

AMD updated its CPU market schedules, looking as far as Q4 2010, across various CPU product lines. The update involves phasing out several existing products, adding replacements, and the addition of new products, according to sources in the motherboard industry. To begin with, several Phenom II X4 900 series quad-core processors will be discontinued. The company has reportedly already stopped taking orders for the Phenom II X4 910 (HDX910WFK4DGI, 2.60 GHz), and the 125W Phenom II X4 945 (HDX945FBK4DGI, 3.00 GHz). The latter perhaps is phased out due to its 95W variant (HDX945WFK4DGM). The company will stop taking orders for the 140W Phenom II X4 965 BE in Q1 2010, perhaps because of its 125W variant, for X4 925 around the same time, and for the X4 955 125W in Q2. The company is planning to release a 95W variant of the X4 955 around that time.

The company will also stop taking orders for several Phenom II X4 800 series, X3 700 series, X2 500 series, and Athlon II X4 600 series, and X3 400 series processors, as Phenom II X4 820, Phenom II X3 740 and Phenom II X2 550 will remain. Q4 2009 will see the introduction of the 3.20 GHz Phenom II X2 555, the new Athlon II X4 640 (3.00 GHz, 95W), and the Athlon II X3 445 (3.10 GHz, 95W) will follow in Q2 2010.

Finally, Q2 2010 will see the introduction of the company's six-core processor, codenamed "Thuban". Built on the 45 nm process, it features 512 KB of L2 cache per core, and 6 MB of shared L3 cache. It retains the socket AM3 package, and the first in the series could sport a clock speed of 2.80 GHz.

So, what will come first? Intel Gulftown or AMD Thuban? Gulftown obviously will be the better performer of the two but AMD has a chance to steal some of Intel's thunder.

Performance wise yes, but a relatively cheap Hexa-Core is quite a temptation.

How about chipsets on the six core CPU? Will they keep it 700-series?

Planned update is the 800 series.
Possibly 56 lanes on the PCI-E end of things.

SB will probally get introduced at the same time most likely in same sku naming scheme as todays chipsets.
890fx 890x 890gx 880g ..
sb800 sb850.
Orginal roadmap dating back 12 months have listed it in august this year, but obv not.

I can't name one game that makes good use of four cores.

As far as I know any half decent game support Quad if not Oct-Core now.
"Runs great on Core I7" crap, anyone?

I was about to agree with FordGT90, but then I found this:

Maybe SC doesn't use all cores to the fullest, but it's pretty good.

GTA4 is the only one of those I have installed (CPU usage during benchmark):

50 + 20 + 10 + 10 + 40 + 80 + 20 + 50 = 280
280/800 = 0.35
0.35 * 100 = 35%

Core i7 920. It wasn't even using half of the available processing power. On Gulftown at the same clockspeed would only be operating at 23% CPU usage.

That's framerates, not CPU usage. Framerates are 90% determined by the card. Also note that they changed the resolution on each of the tests.

Supreme Commander, visually, didn't change for me going from a dual core Opteron 180 to a Core i7 920. The game slows its clock down if the CPU is being over burdened (making a 1 hour long game take 8 hours). Again, framerates/resolution really say nothing about how burdened the CPU is.

No. The new 955 is a 95W. The original is a 125W. The 965 original is a 140W.

Thats what I'm saying, I just can't justify spending over $500 on a pocessor, good example is my 720 BE I bought for $140, I havent ran into a game that gives it any trouble. Granted a Octa isn't a gaming proc, I would sure use it as one If the price was good.

I've seen the 125w 965, retail (Provantage). It is the C3 stepping. No 95w 955 yet.

New one is 95W. Possibly not a Black Edition, but that bit remains to be seen.

SC is very CPU heavy. The reason they changed the resolution is that they wanted to find the highest playable settings. So, you're right that games doesn't use 4 cores to the fullest, but there definitely is an advantage.

...that would, at this time, not extend to 6 cores or more. Very few games out now are adaptive to their environment to that extent, especially on the CPU front. Hexacores will definitely benefit the server/workstation market more so than the mainstream consumer market. This is why Intel has no plans to release a hexacore LGA-1156 processor.

AMD must make Thuban price competitive with their quad-cores in order to create a hexacore market that currently doesn't exist for mainstream parts like Intel did with their first MCM quad-cores (Core 2 Quad).

As I said in my first response, AMD really has an opportunity here--not for a performance crown but for a platform crown (AM3 is a cheaper platform than LGA-1366). If AMD succeeds in bringing cheap hexacore processors to market (creating the market), Intel may be forced to release price competitive hexacore LGA-1156 processors sooner (Nehalem/Westmere) rather than later (Sandybridge).
