Power for the 5970 (5870x2)

Now I know that finalised details haven't been released yet, but with my current PSU, would I be able to handle the 5970/5870x2? Or will I need to upgrade to a 1000w one? By looking at the 5870 can you give a rough idea of power needs for the 5970

Your PSU should not be running your current card, let alone something more powerful. Codegen is garbage generic stuff. Don't be surprised if that thing fails and takes your system with it. Your PSU IS the foundation of your system. Always use a quality power supply. Sorry if that sounds harsh, but it is the truth.

As you said we can only make presumptions but I think you will be ok to run one. From what I have read, DX11 cards are quite energy efficient

EDIT: I Didn't look at the manufacture :/ I just had a quick look at the wattage, sorry. I do think you would be ok on the wattage side of things but only with a quality PSU.

+1. that psu shouldnt be running a 4870. get an antec/corsair/pcp&c/ocz psu of 700+ watts

What is the AMPs that each 12v rail deliver from your current PSU?

You have enough Watts 800+ but what i have heard the new ATI 5XXX Series have high AMP usages? This is more important than your watts.

If you can tell us that then we can then determine if your current PSU will do the job

Codegen = evil, no doubt about it.

Even if it does work well right now, well, suddenly one day it won't and can take a big part of your beloved rig with it.

You should change it now, don't wait for a new card. You can add a Be quiet!, Enermax and even Cooler Master (this is if you don't want/can't spend too much $$) to LittleLizard's list.

My Mushkin 800w (good quality) PSU beats someone's cheapo 1200w PSU. I highly doubt that a PSU with 2 12v rails is gonna pull 825w (all the good PSUs I have seen have 1 or 4+ rails).

Just looked up the Codegen, and it has 2 18a rails, and just as I expected, a 50A 5v rail. My Mushkin 800w has 4 20A rails which can be switched to make 1 64A rail.

It is the +12V that really matters anyways, that PSU might sum up to 825W with the other rails that nothing really uses much of.

Yup, thats why I figured that they used a really outrageously large 5V rail for the "high-wattage" e-peen. My Mushkin has around 30A on both 5V and 3.3V rails which is standard.

I also had that Corsair TX750 (my dad has it now) and it is a wonderful PSU. I only bought the Mushkin because it was cheap and had modular cabling, but it turned out to be a great PSU. Can't seem to find my XP-800AP anymore on Newegg, maybe they discontinued it.

Yea i Get what you are saying. I should of said look at the AMP's and Watts that both 12v rails produce and then we can determine if it will run the card. As it might say something like 600W from the 2 12v rails combined etc

I bought my previous PSU - Cooler Master Silent Pro 700RS - for the same reasons. And it also turned out to be a great PSU. If not my bizarre love for Be quiet! I'd still use it for sure. One can find it on newegg for as little as ~100 bucks. It bravely juiced my current rig with 5870, and with GTX 285 and 4870X2 that I've had before (not simultaneously though - one card at the time).

This Antec is a monster PSU http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817371022

4 25A rails good for combined 62A @ 80+ Bronze, can be pushed further at the cost of efficiency though.

Got mine local for $95 local.

I'd say anything from 600W decent power should do. I'm running 2 x 5850 + NVIDIA 9800GTX and I can dump an IntelBurnTest+FurMark simultanously with all memory and it still ain't going over 550W's by the meter on wall +/-5%. Favor Corsair TX series and of course my personal favorite (costs just like hell) Be-Quiet for style.

Offtopic though while reason:
Honestly, I think there's misunderstanding even on 5970 as an 5870x2 card. The clocks match for 5850x2 card and I think it's exactly that. Don't see any reason why they would clock down as these ones clocks very very well.

Bro they have really good deals on Corsair 750tx's all over the place. I would definitely invest in a better power supply. Sometimes you might get lucky with the lower cheaper brands but think of it like this...... Would you put a time bomb in your case with all of your nice expensive hardware????? That's kind of what your doing when you go cheap on your PSU.
With that said go for Corsair, Antec, OCZ, brands like that and do research before you buy. I would also say you want a single rail at least 60AMPS

The PSU looks sweet mate. +12V lines up to 840W @ 70A is very. very nice. My only concern is noise level. Single 80mm fan can be a little loud when PSU will get decent load on it.

I'd go for one of those:
Enermax
Corsair
Seasonic

That Antec shouldn't be loud, a good PSU stay reasonablely cool even under full load.
