PC Not Booting Up

Ok i need help on this one, my PC was fine Monday at 7am as I was using it, went to boot it up at like 8pm and nothing is happening at all, the power light on my mobo is on but nothing happens when i go to turn it on, i tried booting with 1 stick of RAM but didn't try other sticks as it's under my CPU cooler...

So anyone got tips on what to do? It could be anything and I don't know where to start :S

We have a computer in one of our schools that had that issue. It was the power supply and it took out the motherboard with it. It would come on sometimes (lights) but nothing more.

Do you have a power supply tester?

Dang, my brother's PC also has the same problem, sometimes it turns on sometimes it doesn't, if it turns on it will be good in Windows for a while then suddenly it will shutdown and won't turn back on.

Did you clear the cmos and reset everything?

if his fans arent even turning on then it is the power supply
DaveK, start by replacing your power supply and go from there. it might have taken your board with it, it might not have.

you can try shorting the green and yellow(i think its the green and yellow, can someone confirm or correct this?) wires on the 20/24pin connecter and see if the power supply turns on. if it does than its the mb, if not then its the psu

try swapping the PSU if you have an extra. if not, then try getting a psu tester, they are cheap. Also try a different socket in the wall and possibly a different cord from the PSU to the wall.

IMO i would guess its the PSU. no power brings no post no nothing, so thats what it sounds like to me.

Try another keyboard and mouse. I thought my parent's PC was dead and it baffled me for two months, then I took their tower into my room, used my own peripherals and all was well.

Luckily we had a few keyboards lying around and a walmart nearby for a cheap mouse.

i couldnt remember if yellow was the ground or black...then i thought of the 4 pin molex connections, with 1 yellow 1 red and 2 black, and iw as like "black must be ground" but i've seen yellow be gorund in other industrys so that just stuck with me haha

Uh, no. If a keyboard or mouse is missing, you would receive a beep code. Im willing to bet its that power supply, motherboard, or both.

Not really. If you have to move it for the short to happen, (as it was in my case) it would freeze/shut the computer down. I replaced it and it stopped. I mean it WOULDN'T start until i replaced the mouse.

It seems that the PSU is down, try another one and see if the computer will boot up.
