Athlon II X3/X4 for gaming @ 1680x1050- Your Thoughts Please :)

I really want to get back into PC gaming and want to do it as cheaply as possible as I'm on a very tight budget. Does anyone own one of these processors and game at the resoluution in my title. Also, suggestions on a cheap graphics card for this res would be great. Ideally, I want to buy most parts second hand but this can be a bit of a nightmare as I'm UK based and not many parts advertised on here.

Phenom II X3 720- The best price for performance you're going to find, especially for gaming. Overclock it a little bit and you'll have a chip that won't hold anything back and will last for years to come.

Does anybody read anymore? For a start that link to the 720 BE is redundant as I'm in the UK. Secondly, I'm asking about the athlon II multicore processors and if anyone has one, what their gaming experience has been like.

Yeah sorry, "Phenom" and "Athlon" look similar at a glance. I don't think that a newegg link is redundant, it is still showing you the product and it's specs, it would be up to you then to find it at your preferred e-tailer. Really though, a Phenom II x3/x2 is going to run just a little bit more or even about the same as an Athlon II x3/x4 (over here at least), just depends if you want the extra cache.

No problem. I just want ideas on performance really at 1680x1050 as i'd like to play most games.

Athlon X3/4 would be fine for gaming. Concentrate your budget on the video card. Throw a small OC on the CPU just to make doubly sure it's fast enough for your needs.

I agree. From testing on multiple sites I have seen the move from single to dual core is huge, dual to triple is pretty nice, triple to quad is a very minor difference.

On a budget, AMD Athlon X4 620 or X3 720 are the best Bang for your buck.

The 940 would be like a $50 jump in price. It is also only for AM2 socket. The 720 or 620 would be more future proof and AM3 socket chips. If he is going to spend $165+ on a processor then he might as well stick with AM3 and get the PII X4 955.

I cant comment on the new athlons and phenoms, but i use an old athlon x2 6000 and game at 1680x1050 with no problems at all. Some games i have to turn the AA down or off, but i think that is more my graphics card than processor.

Hope this helps.

Not any more. The 940 is the same price as a 945 at this point. The 955 is only like $6 more expensive. The only thing keeping the 940 on the market in my opinion is it is a simply and easy upgrade to an existing AM2+ system. No BIOS updates needed. The performance difference between the Phenom I and Phenom II's is huge. I mean even the X3 720 can out pace the Phenom I 9950 at stock, clock for clock, and any other comparison you can thing off and do it all with less heat.

x3 720 for sure. At 1680x1050, your GPU is what will make or break your gaming regardless.

just keep an eye out for models that can be unlocked, for games a phenom II dual core would probably outdo an Athlon II triple core.

(and the phenom may well unlock to a triple, most athlon II's dont unlock in my experience)

3 of the 5 x3 720s I bought for the office unlocked. From what I've read the chances are pretty good of getting one that does.

Wow, thanks for all your replies. Do Amd have anything in the very near future that is going to improve on these phenom II's? If so, is it worth waiting until they are released or are they just going to be higher clock speeds like the X4 965?

IMO, Go with the X3 720BE, X4 810 or X3 435, x4 620 for budget purposes. Newer games are becoming multi-threaded and optimized for more than 2 cores. I think there 6 core variant will be on the AM3 socket.

Jr. right. The plain right now is to get the 6 core out for desktop users by mid 2010. Then later that year, they are overhauling Laptop systems with the 880G and 880GX IGP/Northbridge, new chipsets, new Neo's, etc. Then bulldozer is planned for late 2011, early 2012.

get the x3 720, runs everythign fine most if not all can get 3.6ghz any thing above is a bonus and as always with all AMDs possibility of unlocking

the mobo i have is pretty good if your looking for a decent board, doesn't have an IGP so it doesn't heat as much

ASUS M4A79XTD EVO

the athlons might unlock that l3 cache and a core but nothing is guaranteed so at least with the x3 720 be your at least guaranteed a decent cpu

EDIT: They have some new stepping coming (lower wattage) possibly higher clocking using lower volts but its nothing drastic to wait on.
