James Cameron's AVATAR (the game) thread
I bought AVATAR off Steam last night as kind of an impulse buy. The movie previews look so amazing that I couldn't stop myself from the chance to play the game already. I played it for about an hour or so and really enjoyed it. I'm looking forward to playing more tonight.
I'm not sure if it is an issue with my rig or maybe it is slated for a future patch, but the DirectX part of the graphics options was shaded out leaving me with only DX9. Even so the game looks gorgeous. Put Deadspace, Crysis, Mass Effect, and Conan in a blender and the result graphics-wise is an Avatar smoothie. About an hour or so into the game you have to choose sides... making for contrasting gameplay a second time around. I chose human first time around. Anyone else getting this or already have it? |

I can't seem to get any screenshots to work. Normal Alt+PrtScr is just giving me a black image file. The game has a screenshot hotkey but I can't locate where it is saving the images to.

As for the over-the-shoulder perspective... I really enjoyed Dead Space and after a while came to the conclusion that the clunky mouse control that made it hard as hell to aim right only added to the creepiness of that game. It was bad enough that shit jumped out at you from nowhere and that you always felt inclined to check your six... but always having to worry that you had a slim chance of getting the first shot off on your mark just added to the tension. Loved that game.
All that said... the controls for Avatar are much more precise. Aiming the helicopter thing is a PIA though... kind of like aiming the aircraft in Crysis. |

I was glad to see it had tons of option for Video Settings. Even 3D settings in there, first game I see with native 3D Support like that.

game play is mmorpg'ish bland. My god I think Ubi is trying to make avatar mmorpg.
Graphics absolutely kick ass. Fires spread thru the forest like farcry 2. Day/night cycles. Every trees braches sway gently in the wind. Environmental detail is just superb and original. by far the best graphics on PC, period. fo sho. for now. this based on free demo.

hahah well there haven't been many games that have come out with the intention to take that title so it's wholly possible.

Very few games based on movies are worth writing home about. A Bee Movie...that's about it. Publishers generally don't want to spend much money on a game and just like the film itself, they are looking to milk a cash cow that they pumped a lot of money in to for advertising. What's more, the games are always rushed to meet the film timeline. The result is 99.9% abysmal.

Actually... I do have to agree that the graphics are amazing. Gameplay is exactly as described in reviews... repetitive and easy to get bored with. I keep playing mainly because I want to see what is around the next bend or over the next cliff.
I wish they had put as much variety in the gameplay as they did in the eye candy. The movie was incredible BTW. Braved the record setting snow storm to see it in 3D today. I think I am going to have to go see it again. It's one of those movies where you can't possibly take everything in in one sitting. I can't imagine what the CGI bill amounted to.

300 million is the number I heard a lot (mostly invested in the new cameras).

The character is too much to the left of the monitor which makes it feel weird to me.
