4870 > 5770 is more like a downgrade go for a 5850 or a 5870, and you get more of a upgrade

He's taking a crack at the 2nd revision cooler that is actually quite impressive for being a stock cooler. Some people can't see through looks to performance.

Going from a 4870, nothing slower than a 5850 if you ask me... (for the record I've got both, a 5770 and a 4870 1GB)

They're terrible coolers they're just on a very good cool running GPU.

I had one on a 4870 and it sat around 60c idle and went up to 80 underload.

Rubbish.

when they first came out they were pretty a good deal. ($159 than went to 130s so I got a pair) But the 5850s just went up, supposed to be $279 (good deal) to $309 and now $359 for the XFX.
I noticed they have a 5850 at newegg for $309 (pretty reasonable) but the 5770s are crazy now, my XFX ones are $180.

So with those crazy prices than like you said the 5850 for $309 is the way to go.

ATI marketers are just kicking back laughing their asses off at us.

If that is the case it is not the same cooler, their is a topic about this on the forum. That cooler is great.

It's the exact same one, just a different shroud.

Its just a generic orb cooler with 2 8mm heatpipes, the copper base is really thick so kinda defeats the point of heat pipes too.

They're terrible coolers

AMD use the same heatsinks themselves on their prototype cards, there's a pic floating about on the net of a 5970 with two of them ( no shroud) fitted.

Here is the card I had and the offending GPU sink

That egg cooler has a fan that runs much faster than the reference cooler by default.
No one stops you from turning up the fan of the stock cooler.
The stock cooler of the HD5770 doesn't get loud until 45%, and by default it is set to 21~33% only.

It is not the cooler that is impressive, but it is the chip that it cools is very impressive.

Edit: A chain is as strong as its weakest link.
It has a thick copper base and 90% of the time these cooler bases aren't polished properly.

Two 5770 are not significantly more expensive than a 5850 and are faster alot. I bought two for 338.00 shipped and the 5850 are 320 to 350 + shipped. Remember those prices on the egg don't include shipping. here is an example http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/Produc...tCode=10011608

Thats not the same heatsink. This one was redesigned with larger heatpipes if I am not mistaken.

I can't believe newegg doesn't offer a free shipping option for items over a certain amount.

Most UK sites do.

I don't know what to do with my Gigabyte 5770... the picture has it as the 1st revision, it came and is actually the model with the egg shaped (rev. 2) cooler. It came with a Dirt 2 key though, and I got it for $153. If I RMA it it won't be enough to cover the expenses for another one, and I can't find the original 5770 anywhere. Bill at ewiz was kind enough to check all the cards for me and they're all egg shaped.

I might keep it since it's got heatpipes, and I've read it's quieter. =x I'm right now!

No its the same cooler, mine had 8mm heat pipes, I doubt this has 10mm.

See the HD5770 new cooler thread latest page for pics.

Ah well then its the same cooler, as yours also has 8mm heatpipes : ]

The HD5770 is nearly twice as efficient as hd4870 so of course the performance of the cooler would seem greater, its still an incredibly shoddy cooler by todays cooling standards, its just the hd5770 is freaken awesome .

so what if it is the same cooler since it is working great on these cards? this is the first card I have owned in a few years I don't feel the need to put an aftermarket cooler on. Kantastic, I would keep the V2, I haven't read any actual reviews saying this cooler suck, it is all assumptions.

It sucks because of its relative performance to other coolers.

: ]

Try putting it on a hot card and watch it fail.

Sucks compared to what because it takes very little to cool a 5770 and if it does the job and is relativelt quiet who cares.
