CATALYST 09.11 vs. CATALYST 09.12

Hello everyone,

Now that the CATALYST 09.12 is out (last driver for 2009), I was thinking of doing some benchmark using both 09.11 & 09.12 so we can all compare performance diff. between the drivers. I have some cards at hand once I finish benching all of them, they should give us a nice picture of driver differences on different cards. I am going to start with RADEON 5870, will also include RADEON 5850 and 5770 soon, along with GTX 285 & RADEON 4890 (hopefully). Will post the benchmark soon.

3DMark Vantage

HIS RADEON HD 5870 1GB (850, 4800)

CATALYST 09.11

CATALYST 09.12

Call Of Juarez DX10

[Min. FPS / Max. FPS / Avg. FPS]

CAT 09.11 / 09.12

1920x1080 NoAA - 39.4 FPS / 160.6 FPS / 82.7 FPS ||| 41.3 FPS / 160.6 FPS / 81.8 FPS

1920x1080 4xAA - 28.5 FPS / 128.2 FPS / 68.5 FPS ||| 28.5 FPS / 128.2 FPS / 67.4 FPS

Crysis Warhead - Ambush Demo

DX10, Enthusiast Shader

CAT 09.11 / 09.12

1920x1080 NoAA - 36.84 FPS / 36.35 FPS

1920x1080 4xAA - 31.69 FPS / 31.37 FPS

Unigine Heaven 1.0 (1920x1080 4xAF, NoAA, Full Screen)

CATALYST 09.11

With Tessellation

Without Tessellation

CATALYST 09.12

With Tessellation

Without Tessellation

FurMark 1.7.0 (1920x1080)

CAT. 09.11

CAT. 09.12

I have to say I'm not impressed with 09.12. A little increase in 3DMark is nothing....

I would be interested to see this, for me there has been an increase in fps of around 5-10% for crysis/WH and around 10% on vantage, but no change in heaven or dirt 2 as far as i can tell on my hd5870.

I got about a 10% boost overall. In all games and in Vantage. Though I have been seeing mixed results.

But like I said for me..... I got a really great affect!. But I might install the Hot fix too just to see if I can get anymore.

Cat 9.9 and 9.12

Wells heres the results i did i have been using cat 9.9 for a long time

Using Fraps
WorldOfWarcraft
Settings
1920x1080 Multisampling 4x and everything on High
I tested this in Dungeon ZF at entrance

9.9
Frames---Time (ms)----Min-----Max-----Avg
3535-----20000-------174----179----176.75

9.12
Frames---Time (ms)----Min-----Max-----Avg
3203-----20000-------147----167----160.15

NOW for the Heaven Benchmark v1.0

9.9

9.12

So in game i have gotten worse frames lost a Avg. of 16.6fps thats sad but in Heaven Bench i gained a whole 0.5fps

Ok i did another test to show how 2x 4850 are to 1x 5870 with the same settings as the no tessellation here they are EDIT: whoops just noticed the other test didnt have 4xAA i will do a re test with that off ok its fixed

Over all im not happy with Cat 9.12

Proof of 9.12

I noticed an increase in frames on dirt 2 but I noticed the windshield wiper water effect was taken away. I also noticed a lower furmark score too. Of course that means nothing.

It's funny when people bench old drivers vs new drivers expecting massive improvements in all titles as if a driver will magically improve performance in all 3D applications. ATI's driver updates improve only what the release notes say they will improve. The release notes state that you will see an improvement with 3D Mark Vantage... and you do. Did anyone test Stalker: Pripyat.

Saying you're not impressed with 9.12 because it "only" does what ATI claimed it would do is pretty lame.

I seen an increase in my 5770 performance. I would like to think that these drivers were aimed at the 5xxx series card improvements than the older 4xxx series.

So many drivers in the past claimed performance improvements in certain applications, but in reality, sometime they improve other application performance as well. In this case, vantage is an improvement, but most other applications are actually performing lower. There was no other way of knowing than comparing the drivers.

I am dissatisfied with 9.12 not because it does 'only' what ATI claims, but because it actually lowers performance in other applications...

It's not that I'm against comparing drivers. I just think sometimes people expect more than ATI can offer.

It is pretty lame to lose performance with a new driver and for that you have reason enough to be disappointed. However, aside from WOW the loss isnt all that significant but your complaint is valid.

I did expect more from 09.12, and just like before (so many times), I was disappointed again. Nothing we can do.....we can only hope to get better driver release...
