My 4870.

Ok, so I've downloaded winflash and RBE. I've extracted the BIOS from my HIS Radeon HD4870 video card (512mb GDDR5). I'd upgrade video cards, but seriously...this single card still performs like a champ, and runs my games (CoD:MW2, Assassins Creed, GTAIV etc) at full like a champ...so the way I see it, I can wait until next August to update to the 5970.

ALL I want to do is set my default fan speed to 35%. It's the perfect balance for me, and its how I have it set in CCC. It's SILENT (which has alot to do with my Cosmos case), and cool (which has alot to do with my Cosmos case and its cable management).

My loaded bios is the right size (128kb). I just need to know how to change the fan speed. Thats all I want to do, nothing "complicated" (for you anyway...I have no idea what I'm looking at, and yes I read the tutorial lol...).

If you read the tutorial, than you know how to do it. In RBE just change the fan settings to how you would like it to be, than flash the card. Thats it.

I don't know if its just me...but the tutorial doesn't really tell me much. I relate this to CCC and the fan settings in there....but its totally different. I'm a nub with this stuff, but I figure with a small bit of assistance, I can get a seemingly simple thing like editing a fan value.

Look, you can just change the fan speed to whatever you want in CCC. But if you flash the card with a bios that has the fan profile changed you don`t have to have CCC installed at all and it will still spin with the speed you set in RBE.

I know that....its the values and stuff I don't understand in RBE....I explained that already. I want to do this primarily because I'm taking a Unix course and I need to install Linux and BSD on my machine and you can't manually edit fan speeds in those OS'.

EDIT: I can upload my RV770.bin file (reimported from GPU-Z as opposed to winflash, as per the recommendation of the tutorial), if somebody wants to do it for me, or at least can somebody just tell me the values I need?

In the fan settings tab choose: Use look up table and then just set the desired fan speed at the desired temperature(it means that when your graphics card reaches a certain temperature the fan will spin up to the set speed)

Hello I've used RBE to also change my fan settings. As you are looking at RBE and you are now in the fan tab settings...you are there now right and you have your bios loaded?...

O.k now I only have the 3 dots and one slope, your situation may vary. To the far left of the screen is fan cycle%. I assume its set at 26%, move the far left blue dot up till its at your desired point...35% the blue dot immediately to the right of the one you are moving may also move with it. That's all there is to it.

I would also suggest moving the far right blue dot as well, ATI and vendors tend to not understand that the memory, at least with the a 4870x2, is the hottest part on the board. My experience is the memory cause the VRU to reset to default mode before the gpu overheats. Your setting for :Tmax may be 95 or 85, To keep your card cool and avoid VRU resets change the Tmax to 71(Directly input the number in the square to the right of Tmax). My Tmax was set at 95 and I would VRU before the fan got past 30% duty cycle following the original slope. I'm now set 809gpu/991mem (stable) settings and stock fan now correctly cools in power-play Dynamic auto-fan mode.

Flash to the Asus Top Bios - the best for OC and fan profile.
I tried many bios when I had my 4870 512mb and found it to be the best.
