HDD Sata Port plastic broken

Ahoyhoy

i have 2 Raptors but one of the plastic bits has broken off the Sata port that holds the cable nice and secure... so now i cant plug it it

any ideas on what i can do to fix it?

2nd connector from the left, missing the plasic brace to hold in the sata cable.

(also you may notice "slushie tower" in the background) 6 ft of cups.

Superglue the cable to the drive...

take a sata cable with the 90 bend and electrical tape it.

UPDATE

well i have retreated to my laptop after smoke started pouring from the hdd area


im going to assume somthing went wrong :P the drive started making a wierd clicking noise unlike iv heard b4... simmiler to when it starts up and shutdown sound.

i may have just killed my poor raptor



also is super glue conductive? lol gah i dono weather to laugh or cry :P



well im going to plug just the power cable back in and see what happens wish me luck


i cannot find any physical damage or marks on the drive itself or on the cable, thats where the smoke seemed to have been coming from, the joint where it plugs in.


i think the real question is, shouldnt the psu shutdown in a situation like this? or does my psu not have this feature (antec neo he500)

scrap that, i think i have found black marks on about 16- 20 gold connectors on the pcb

and it smells bad.

chances of it working again? :P

going to find a better way of plugging it in

After smoke, chances are slim. Though I had an old drive smoke recently, I was able to replace the part on the PCB that got toasted and surprisingly it worked again. So I'd say find out if there is a toasted part on the PCB.

Yes superglue is slightly conductive. =/ Bad idea to superglue anywhere near the contact pins... hate you did that.

The electrical tape and 90 degree would have worked fine minus the smoke feature

You can keep fiddling with it, but the drive is likely toast (anything is fixable if you have the time and resources) -- but data recovery is certainly possible if you had/have anything you wanted off it. Or if you simply want to grab another drive of equal or larger cap and just mirror the smokey drive onto it.

I'm sure cyanoacrylate based adhesives are electrically insulating. They have a pretty low (albeit finite) dielectric constant - probably around that of distilled water. So I highly doubt that the superglue caused any type of short.

I'd think you might have connected the cable reversed since there's no key anymore?

You, sir, are correct.. now that you corrected me I had to go research. -- It is actually commonly used (but not the 'best') insulator in alot of electronic construction, especially repair and construction by hand .. ie: insulating/holding areas after solder.

So no that *likely* wasn't the cause.. so a good thing to know.

However, If you are correct on the 'around distilled water' for the D-const... then in theory it could still cause a short.. Enough impurity there to create a situation.... but that is neither really here nor there -- Does sound like it was more than 'super-glue' use that caused this smoking HD. =)

Even reversed it seems odd it would have such a drastic reaction -- (Maybe I'll toast an old drive just to experiment.)

Super glue the broken part back on or even ask WD if thats covered. Another idea is to buy the secure cable thing that WD so this kind of thing is a lot likely to happen in the 1st place.
