lapping glass

Where would you get a piece of glass that you can use for lapping?

Ask your friends if they have any glass dining tables or something and if you could go over for an hour or two. That or you'll have to buy a small piece off websites like KoolerTek.

I'm talking like a piece of glass that you hold in your hand and make passes with it on the cooler.

I could lap my cooler on my desk, but it's a pain... it's just fine for a processor, but because of the weight of the cooler, it tends to catch or drag the paper...

koolertek?

I picked up a piece roughly the size of a full sheet for a couple bucks at Home Depot.

not sure where to get some glass, i just looked behind a door at my grandmothers one day and found some, go figure..... as for the cooler catching when u lap it, i found it comes down to technique, and if all else fails add more lube .. um water and dont for get to tie her down, um tape down the paper if it's moving or wet the back of the sand wet n dry to help it stick

I recommend a small mirror. I have one that's about 8" by 10" that I use.

there are /were tons of industrial glass cutting companies around here, just google your zipcode with the word glass cutter... they usually install windows in commercial construction sites.. but they throw away tons of good quality 1/2 inch thick or thicker glass every day just ask the manager if you can take a broken piece i'm sure hell let you.. and if you want one cut they'll cut one of the broken pieces for you and round of the corners for a few bucks if your nice

Oh, I always thought table is good enough. Never lapped before due to the fact I never needed to.

The process of lapping removes all kinds of variations in the surface of the heatsink. Unless your table is made of something like branite and polished mirror-smooth, it probably won't be as flat as glass.

There are some lapping klits available:

Check with your local countertop guys. They hone the stone to near perfection and usually you can get the sink cut outs for free. I was lucky enough to get a rather large piece of granite. Two huge plusses, it was free, and its heavy, so it doesnt move when I lap.

My grandma got a glass retirement plaque, but they misspelled it so she got another one. She gave me the misspelled one so I could use it for lapping.

Long story short I have a piece of glass to use now.

That would have sucked. I would be pissed to get that.

"Thank you very much for your many years of service. Um, who are you again?"

even tiny gheto redneck towns have glass shops, try the yellow pages, they will give you scraps for free, if you want a 2 foot by 2 foot piece plan on spending all of 5$.

Walmart, Costco, Shopko any other department store that sells mirrors. Buy a cheap mirror. You could also go to the carnival and just win one of those mirrors with Guns N' Roses or a pot leaf printed on it.

Actually, any kind of image on the surface adds a noticable thickness and would be bad for lapping. Unless of course, you cleaned it off with a chemical or something.
