might buy a q9550 (@ MC $160) have a few questions (might apply 2 all 45nm quads?)

I am thinking about getting a q9550 from microcenter for $160... I see a lot of people doing this lately...

I cant seem to get a straight answer about a few things

question 1: what is a safe max temp for this CPU? (or 45nm quads in general)

question 2: what is a safe Vtt/CPU termination for this CPU?

question 3: what is a safe voltage

I understand that this is not going to be definitive and that it comes down to a lot of things...

btw I am on water right now and can keep an x3210 (kentsfield G0) @ 3.2 below 45c at all times... thats the cooling system I plan to use)

System Specs

1. 95c

2. Depends on the motherboard possibly?

3. 1.35v is Intel's recommended maximum voltage.

i know on the old x3210 when i was going for big FSB numbers I would commonly push it to 1.5v+ but that was 65nm...

Just because '1.35v is Intel's recommended maximum voltage' doesn't mean you can't push 1.5+ volts through the chip, just that you should know it will lower its lifetime (and possibly damage it, but that's a risk we all run into when doing extreme overclocking, it should be no problem for you running water).

I have an old E8400 Core 2 that disagree's with you. You are correct though, it's always a risk.

That's one heck of a price for a Q9550. Don't walk RUN before they are out of stock!

Buy it, you will be glad you did..

I went from a x3210 @ 3.4 to a Q9400 @ 3.6 it wasn't much quicker, sometimes felt a hair slower *cache maybe*

When I dropping in my Q9550 I got that little spunk back and then some more!
Great chip by all means, only thing holding me off an i7.

Don't worry, we have several members around here who don't find it necessary to read a thread before replying

Play around with the OC. My Q9550 hits a FSB wall at 470 so I can't go into 4GHz+ 24/7 without going over the magical safety net of 1.365v

I didn't find any significant difference in games one you go over 3.7GHz, and at 3.9GHz I hit my sweet spot between voltage and speed.

They are known to do much better as well of course, only some time overclocking and tweaking will tell. Good luck
