To HDMI or not to HDMI

Hey all,

I have a couple SLI'd GTX 280s that are HDMI capable with a DVI-to-HDMI adapter. However, for the last few years I've been using my old Samsung CRT monitor. I'm considering purchasing a new LCD which has an HDMI port.

I mainly use the machine for gaming. For multiplayer games I generally play older games like Quake and dumb-down the graphics, but for casual single player gaming I definitely want the best visuals possible. Will using HDMI and the DVI-to-HDMI adapter do anything for me? Or do people typically only use HDMI for viewing movies on their monitor/television?

HDMI and DVI are the same thing (kind of), the key difference between the two is HDMI can also transmit audio along the cable, dvi cant. hdmi also has more bandwidth but unless your monitor has a very high resolution (over 2500x1600) DVI will be fine.


if your buying a new LCD, make sure you get a high resolution (1920 x 1200, 1920 x 1080), High contrast ration (1000 or over static not dynamic), high responce time (2-5ms) 21-26 inch screens are nice area to start.

I'm not interested in audio and I probably won't run a resolution higher than 1920×1080; so sticking with DVI should be ok then, yes? Also, what are you thoughts on the monitor(s)?

If you already have an HDMI cable, use it. But otherwise, DVI cables carry the same picture quality.

personaly after using LG monitors then trying some samsung, i have to recomend them.

if you can afford it grab a samsung imo, otherwise that lg will be fine.

also LED backlit is where its at for best quality. forgot to mention that.
