Value of lapped processors?

I've always wondered, when a heatsink is lapped I'm pretty sure the value goes up, but what about processors?

it depends on the person who's going to buy it.

lapping does 2 things usually,
1. Makes it flat for better contact with the heatsink ( you must also lap the heatsink if you lap the cpu for better contact) which leads to a little better temps

2. Voids warranty

IMO if its lapped it's worth less, you cant rma it if something happens to it ( which does happen sometimes )

pritty sure the value goes down on processors, usualy it means they have been overclocked by a large margin and thus may have been damaged

I would say the value goes down.

I have to agree to an extent. If the chip is an exceptionally good clocker, it makes no difference to me if its lapped, just save me the energy

On the average chip, yes it may make or break a deal versus one not lapped, but Id say like $10-20 drop over the typical used chips is a fair guess.

I've lapped quite a few and had no issues getting rid of them, but I wasnt asking top dollar for them either.

I agree it goes down to most people. BUT to some the value goes UP because of it being lapped . Also just because its lapped doesn't mean that it was abused it could have been lapped because of temps being higher then wanted on a reasonable overclock or maybe someone had nothing better to do(like me)

Also i had no problem getting rid of my lapped CPUs

Hm. I would say the value goes up. I would pay more for a processor that has been modified to get lower temps. (especially since I know how much effort went into doing it ) Generally speaking, when you see a lapped processor for sale, you get two things. 1) Lower temps becasue of better contact and 2) Known overclocks (usually max clocks). I would pay more for that.

I've never had a CPU die on me. Unless you do something stupid, I think it's kinda hard to be in a situation where you'd have to RMA a CPU.

My 2 cents.

too much effort to remove the socket and reset the CPU coolers? More soldered cores? Lack of the brass it takes to do it?

On water it would be as simple as removing the socket, and tightening the screws a bit closer to the motherboard. With air coolers you have to lower the mounting hardware, with caps and such so close to the sockets, its a tough job with an air cooler.

Mostly because most of the cores are soldered now and like sneaky said because of the 'mods' that have to be done to the cooling to have good contact with the CPU after you pop the cap off

makes sence, my phenom II 920 is the first one I have done that too in a long time. still thinking about it. with the xigmatek 1283 it wouldnt be an issue.

I wouldn't pop the the IHS off of a CPU that is using a HDT cooler because there would be less contact with the cooler and CPU because the die is alot smaller then the IHS. So i would think temps would be higher without the IHS on a HDT cooler... But if you are talking about lapping the CPU then go for it. I lapped a CPU that was being used with a HDT cooler and only got lower temps
