Go to the Bios and tell it to boot from CD Drive. Run your XP disk. And if dear old dad can't reformat a hard drive, "computer genius" may be overrating him a tad....

lol@genuis anyhow, some good ol ribbing, hit tab+del or F2 1 of those should bring you into bios from there, find the boot sequence, and put the first one as boot from CD restart make sure your cd is in there, and when it tells you too boot from cd. and do step by step, easy as that son, so am i a super super duper Uber genius now.

Try using the Windows XP installation disc instead of the restore disc, that is if you have one?

I would disagree, even though I like yourself would rather do a clean install, using a restore disc usually save's a lot of time and effort of installing all your program's,

Before going through a total reformat or restore, I would try to see if the KB977165 patch is causing your problem.
1. Boot from your Windows XP CD or DVD and start the recovery console. Once you are in the Repair Screen.. 2. Type this command: CHDIR $NtUninstallKB977165$\spuninst 3. Type this command: BATCH spuninst.txt 4. Type this command: systemroot 5. Type this command: exit Your computer should restart and everything should be back to normal XP CD, going into recovery console, and then running a chkdsk c: /r command.
