AMD's response to GTX 480

This was just posted on a finnish website Muropaketti by a well known overclocker Sampsa Kurri: A pimped 5970

They claim they are the first with the info, so it's only in finnish for now.

A rendered image of the cooler:

Specs:

It's supposed to have 8+8+6-pin power connections.

More pics to come up tomorrow on the site.

That would be a pretty formidable stock cooling solution.

An overclock 5970... i was expected something better like an 5890 single GPU that would left the 5970 far behind in the dust...

it just doesn't seem right the card shouldn't need 8+8+6 to power it and the cooler looks absurd considering a stock cooler can handle pretty good oc's this seems like if anything an asus MARS card and if its like that it wont compete with FERMI it will be an oc'ing toy that people like sampsa, k|ngp|n and 5 other guys get.

yea...not really exciting imo. 4gb memory? i figured it would've been better to up the bus width to 384-bit or something. I thought that on the HD 5870 there were some empty memory chip spots to allow and increase in the bus width.

I'm with cdawall on this one. I really doubt that the "ASUS ROG ARES" is ATI's answer to the GTX 480. I still say ima wait on them releasing an HD 5890 as this overclocked version is just going to cost more than the current HD 5970 which is already like $649 at the egg. And i can't imagine Nvidia releasing the GTX 480 at $600, they fucked up with all the delays but they're not retarded(hope not) so yea this is just for those enthusiasts wanting e-peen, not to counter the GTX 480.

EDIT: and yea that render does look very poor, i mean there's no PCB, not distinction of fins the heatsink just looks like 2 solid copper blocks with pipes in em. If it was really an "answer" i'm sure ATI woulda put more effort to make the render look attractive.

You guys obviously didn't read the chaps post, this is just what Asus is doing with the higher binned chips, other partners have received them aswell.

Yea, the GTX 480 is actually NV's answer to ATI's 5850, ATI will be releasing there 6xxx series somtime this year, leaps and bounds ahead of Nivida

I recall in past occurrences that NV had a slight lead in FPS but Always seemed ATI had the better detail level especially when forced AA/AF was enabled and NV could only pull off the FPS with the detail levels off.

more AIB's should be overclocking and putting better cooling on normal 5970's and just have stricter PSU needs.

I'm sure a stock 5970 would be capable of 850/1200 with even just a boosted fan profile and a PSU that can handle it, the only thing it would be missing is the double memory.

whats kind of odd is that AMD is allowing the 5970 to be messed with but not the 5870? TBH i think this board here is a hoax as it looks way too much like a previous board

....because they couldn't make a reference 5970 4GB card and keep it under 300 watts per ATX spec. So they throw the AIB partners a "reference board", like they did with the 4830, and tell them to go wild.

Now, if an AIB partner was smart, they would use the 5970 vapor chamber cooler and stick the other set of VRM under there and let people have at it. Give it two 8-pins and people might be able to see what a correctly done 5970 can do on air with that vapor chamber.

A picture of the bare card was released on the same site, here's the whole story.

And if you have trouble believing what Sampsa said, just google him around a bit. At least I trust what he says, no bs from that one.
