TriFire - Should i go 5970+5850 or 5870?

The 5850 are a lot cheaper than the 5870 over here, but i am concerned that is not officially supported, which one should i go for?

If the 5850 you use can match the 5970 clocks then I'd use that. I don't see any reason why a 5870 would be necessary.

I'm pretty sure you can, And I'd go for it personally.

I CF a 5850 and 5870, and the 5870 usually runs at about 96-97% gpu useage while the 5850 is at 99% (clocked identically), so my guess is you'll sacrifice only a few % performance (2-5) by buying a 5850 over a 5870 to cf with.

all in all tho not sure about the gains in Trifire, but again, I'd go for it

I saw a review once that had the 5850 being the the better fit with the 5970. If you go for a 5870 you would be wasting your money

with a 5850 under it the fan should still be able to breathe really well still, given the different lengths of the cards, maybe 5 degrees tops is my guess.

I have a 5970 with a 5870. Was using 5870s in crossfire so it made sense for me to stick with the 5870. I will say that I got a huge bump on 3DMarkvantage. Went from 27,500 to 34,600 and change. I run my 5970 at 830/1120 and downclock the 5870 to the same. I am using H20 so my temps are cool. Games are super smooth. Crysis is maxed out on all settings. I am running the 10.3 beta drivers. Will try to bump the clocks up higher this weekend. May also drop in the other 5870 to see what happens with quad fire before I sell it.

I'm on 5850 crossfire and was wondering what would the performance increase be if i added a third 5850. Is it really worth it or just showboating? I have no issues on any game currently - it was more a thought for the future.
