Should we have a sticky about CPU throttling?

I've been thinking about this for a while now. I see so many threads about cpu throttling due to energy saving features that I think the topic deserves a sticky in the overclocking and general hardware sections (the two sections most likely for people to post about this issue in).

+1 this needs to be posted, there is about 1 post a day about CPU clocking down.

funny thing is you assume they would read it

Wouldn't hurt, but it would just give you a place to point to when all those same threads are started.

Why wouldn't they read it? Most people would check stickies for the most common issues...

Nobody who is new to the forum will bother to read stickies. Hell don't read stickies, the FS/WTB/FT forum stickies are a prime example. If everyone read them, then there would be half the work for the mods to do.

Sounds to me like they need to join TPU's WCG team http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=85784

Then they would'nt have to worry about this whole throttling down phenomenon.

I wouldn't necessarily say that's true, sure if it comes up in Google maybe, or if the title catches their attention for what they're after. But generally what happens is people join a forum, start a thread titled "HELP!", "Crashing!", "Overclocking my pc", "Why is my CPU running slower?", "I don't get it..", etc. Without so much as even taking time to read through or notice the dozens of stickies that are on this forum alone compared to the 1000's of others out there.

Realistically, CPU throttling is one of those things better explained on a per-person that needs to know sort of basis, as many either don't even notice till they start getting CPU-z, Everest, etc because sites like this recommend them before overclocking and for monitoring temps and performance. Really a topic like CPU throttling should be added to a sticky thread that's already much more helpful overall. It's too small of a topic, (that is covered as a feature in MB and CPU manuals) for me to see a truly purposeful thread worthy of stickying on this forum. It'd be a topic better added to an already stickied thread than being a unique item. That way the user asking the questions, if willing to read will probably get a few more questions answered before even needing to ask in the first place. I see your point hat, and I'm not here to dog ya on this one, but really...it's just as easy to explain CPU throttling in one sentence...or if it's added to an already stickied topic link to that to give them more than they asked for, which hopefully helps them more than they expected. I'd rather see that personally.

throttling + energy saving are different things. Throttling is the term used when a CPU overheats, and slows down to save itself.

Good point. I made my post purely on his description of it, which is how I've heard many abuse that word's definition. To me throttling is when your CPU/GPU hit's it's TJMax and cuts the speed down before shutdown. But power savers are a much different thing as you said. Though in a sense the power savers throttle the CPU down in a similar fashion it's not a last ditch effort to save itself, it's a handy feature that is like some current hybrid cars out there...it's better to tout it's features and "abilities" up than to prove what it really saves and display disappointment when the bills and costs don't change all that much.

Most people I know ignore stickies anyway (myself included). I say it's not needed.
