Agreed, and I certainly wouldn't want the computer to turn off right in the middle of a BIOS flash...

When you are in the BIOS you will select F8, that will get you into the Q-flash screen. Or you can hit the "end" button during post and it will take you to the same thing. You have to shut down and boot with the flash drive inserted. When you get into q-flash it should already see it. You might Have to select the actual bios file though.

I noticed that the new(est or newer, maybe last 1 or 2 revisions of Core Temp) don't show all the cores of your CPU on the main window like it used to. You can view the temps of the individual cores if you go to Tools in the menu bar and click on System Information (F3).

Or you can just press the F3 key for a shortcut.

Hmm well i think these temps are actually genuine, which is rather worrying
i took off the heatsink after switching off my computer and it felt pretty damn warm D:

In regards to updating bios this is easier

Will flash your bios from inside the OS and works GREAT never had a single issue doing it this way.

As for your over heating problem, the heat-sink should feel a little warm.

Does your motherboard look bowed at all E.M?

and does the heatsink appear to be making contact? It could be a machining flaw where they've taken slightly to much metal of the bottom so its not making contact.

Got a spare heatpipe AMD heatsink if you'd like to try another one before returning anything else?

Agree with panther. I have used Asus Update many, many times and never had a bad flash. Would suggest downloading the bios first from Asus and then choosing it in the Update program. When I have tried to search for new drivers within the Update program it has never worked...

Choose the server manually rather then allowing it to pick the "best one" it will choose the one that is actually down for some reason!

Right, flashed BIOS to the latest one now and i've got MUCH more acceptable temperatures
I've turn the desktop on it's side for the meantime and run about 2 hours in total of OCCT/Linpack to burn in the thermal paste
100% load at 40*

That's actually a good sign—it means that the heatsink is pulling heat away from the cpu.

In response to the coretemp question, it seems that AMD processors don't actually have temp sensors on the core since AM2+ (my 5200+ Windsor had core temp sensors, but my 7750BE didn't, nor does my AII 240), meaning coretemp defaults to reading the socket temp.
